Why does /v/ hate padding so bad? You get to experience the full world with the story and characters you like?
Why do you expect to spend under 4 hours in barely-featured Midgar just like the original game? Why are you so in a hurry? Why can't you enjoy the modern Remake?
Also, I don't really feel any substantial difference of look and feel between the original and the Remakes. I know some things are changed but it's also to make everything more aligned to the modern realistic graphics, and there is nothing wrong with it. I like both OG and Remake btw.

i do enjoy the remake project but the original did some things considerably better, like the storytelling. Just look at how menacing the kalm flashback was in the original compared to rebirth. It's night and day difference. The characterization in Remake is so much better than the original, but in this specific example, Sephiroth's characterization actually makes him less scary. The fact that he talks and interacts so much makes him more human.

Some might say it's more cyberpunk aesthetic, but in the modern rendition, a clean elevator might be necessary to convey the strength and unity of Shinra.

The original is treated as a "Bible" for it has been a kind of concotion that earned the fame it has. It hasn't been considered like that since the beginning, but as a result of all the things put in place, after having played it. Remake just lived and had been accepted at the beginning, due to the hype that the original title had and have. And I repeat, it is a famous title because it has all the right cards to be considered like that, while the Remake spin-off, for make no mistake, after FF7 OG they started a spin-off. The FF7 compilation is a SPIN-OFF of the original FF7. They have take the original characters of FF7, the famous backgrounds etc. and created a SPIN-OFF, in order to have the possibility to expand it in a different way, and that's exacly what is going on with the Remake project. Another story created in the same place, with part of the original characters and part of new ones (like Angeal, the retconned Zack, Angeal etc.).

We couldn't be any more different.
You said such things reduced tension. I'd say the interaction were there because it's good to see characters bonding and understanding each other, until the turn where Sephiroth goes mad and the relationship broke up. The key point here is TRAGIC.
And I disagree with you that it is lacking tension. The moments were still there: Sephiroth is not Zack-level chatty, and he is remembering secret things. The bridge fell and one of their friend died. It was ominous since the beginning that this isn't going well. Are we playing the same fucking game?

In 7 Remake I didn't really mind the padding. Only the fucking sewer area redo felt too much for me.
Anyway I think I would have preferred if Remake was structured in a more replayable way. Like what if your first playthrough went exactly like it does in the original game and only at NG+ you could start breaking away from "destiny" and get tons of new side content that changed the events, and then eventually after multiple playthroughs you could create a chain of events that let you beat the timejannies. Thematically it would fit I think.

I personally didn't mind the padded sidequests because I love VII so much. I liked seeing more fleshed out NPCs who in the OG game just had a line or 2 of dialogue.
I do wish the NPCs looked a little closer to the main cast and not like they were made for a separate game and plopped in VIIR

The problem is that it's too safe. The idea of it actually being a sequel was great but they pussyfoot around the idea of actually changing things in the story. Most of the new shit is sectioned off into its own "dimension" and all the changes that happen in the main "dimension" always quickly course correct back to the status quo that was set by the PS1 original.

Thanks Remake for retconning that. Anyway this is actually a super consistent thing in FF7. Shinra would scour away history so that only they exist. The name "Mako" does nothing to describe what the "Lifestream" actually is. The rebranded it so that no one realizes where their electricity comes from. The Northern Continent used to be called "Knowlespole." Now it's just "Icicle Area." Remember how Shinra memoryholed am entire village being burnt to the ground? Nibelheim? No I was actually talking about Corel although that happened in Nibelheim too. Be sure to buy tickets to Gold Saucer by the way. No wonder Yuffie is so adamant about saving Wutai from Shinra while she can.

How did we get here? How did Shinra manage to scrub away the concept of nations from the entire world? This was the sort of thing that I wanted from an updated FF7 and to be fair, I did enjoy reading about the Junon Republic.

Cloud was fine when he first got to Nibelheim. He was depressed and ashamed from washing out of SOLDIER. But physically he was fine. If we're counting Crisis Core as canon then Zack and Cloud were already friends prior to this but even in OG Zack was at least friendly to Cloud.

Anyway burning of Nibelheim, Cloud is taken by Hojo. Cloud is dunked into Mako per Hojo attempting to recreate Sephiroth without needing to cuck Vincent again, which caused his mind to shatter from Mako Poisoning. 5 years pass, Zack breaks them out. Zack is tough enough to retain his individuality against the bazillion voices swimming the Mako but Cloud is not. So while Zack can find the strength to recover, Cloud falls into a confused coma. Zack tells Cloud stories about his life as they travel to Midgar, which is where Cloud got inside information about how SOLDIER works while also not having information every SOLDIER should have. Like what Shinra's Tower is like.

And that's just it. The Cloud we see for 2/3rd of the game is a cobbled together golem of everything Cloud WISHES he could be. But the real Cloud, the Cloud has always been, that's still buried under all of that. And all of those lies, willful or not, can't make that go away. I think the most heartbreaking scene in the game is when Sephiroth demands Cloud give him the Black Materia in the Temple of the Ancients. And you can see real Cloud screaming and crying, begging himself to stop while he's powerless to do so.

I like FF7, Remake, and Rebirth. I expected padding, but not BAD padding. There's a disrespect for the dramatic tone the original game. A dramatic game with silly moments. Now you have a silly game with dramatic moments.
Rebirth made me really hate that. Every other scene was over the top, so rarely just the characters having a normal conversation. It was bad enough that the moments they were clearly trying to be dramatic with really stuck out. The Barret and Dyne scene was quite dramatic, but on both sides of that was ridiculously over the top shit. One liners were present after Aerith's death before the fucking fight was even done.
Here's the fuckies part I hate though: Shhh, Zack is talking, listen and learn. Le goofy ass squatting man from FF7, whacky lad from Crisis Core, gets pure, uninterrupted drama for his retarded alternate timeline Midgar scenes. No one is laughing, no one is joking. THIS is the new crisis, not whatever silly shit Sephiroth is up to in the real timeline.

We all remember Honey Bee Inn right? Remember how Honey Bee was an all inclusive club where the club owner wants to ensure the patrons that beauty cannot be held by any constraints such as gender? No you don't because that's not how Honey Bee was presented. The Slums of Midgar are a terrible place. Everyone there is either a thief, a junkie, or a poor worker trying to dodge the other two. And the Wall Market is a place where people in the Slums, and some people on the Plate, go to distract themselves from their shitty lives for a short while. Everything is for sale there, including sex. And Honey Bee (was) a love motel where people could have a relatively nice place to fuck. Cloud won't even allow Aerith to enter the place. The dancers there think that Cloud is yet another weirdo. Going to the backroom, one dancer is freaking out because she's hoping she still looks good so she isn't thrown out on the street. Yes this is a terrible way to live. That's why its important that Shinra is defeated.

Remake glosses over all of this. The hostesses are happy to be there, Aerith is happy to be there, Andrea asked for you by name. Does Andrea live here? Why does he want to assure Cloud that he's beautiful, a question he did not ask? That stage was custom built for Cloud to change clothes, is this a normal thing here? Well I know why Honey Bee was changed and I'll post the interview explaining it in a minute.

extending segments out to flesh out a previously short section of a game isn't a horrible idea, if you can meaningfully extend that section in ways that feel worthwhile. remake and rebirth don't really do this, it has side quests and stuff because that's what is expected from AAA RPGs nowadays, but the bulk of the side content just feels like busy work starring he most generic NPCs you've ever seen, so much so that it makes the game look inconsistent artstyle wise because of the gulf in care characters get over random NPCs.

Okay let me preface by saying I don't agree with it. I don't think this is good. I'm just putting myself in the heads of modern SE. If we assume that the stupid Dream World things are Lifestream soap bubbles where people work out their issues before dying then, in the most convoluted way imaginable, Sephiroth's goal is the same as FF7. He's trying to absorb the Lifestream, which by extension would include all the dream worlds. That big, stupid final battle against Bizarro Sephiroth was showing that he could do it already, he just was waiting for Aerith to die. And that the final battle in Rebirth was taking place within a Lifestream under Sephiroth's control. Which would explain how both Zack and Aerith are able to just wander in to help during the Final Battle. Both of them have Dream Worlds dedicated to them and so if Sephiroth took control of the Lifestream then that would include their worlds too.

Now if I'm correct, and again I realize this is stupid, then that hints at the source of Cloud's complete breakdown in the Northern Crater. If dead people who haven't diffused into the Lifestream can just show up in a world controlled by Sephiroth, that means everything Cloud lost can be restored. Aerith can come back. His mom can come back. Tifa can have her father back. Barret can have Myrna back. Maybe Vincent doesn't need to be a cuck. Fighting against Sephiroth would mean actively choosing to let go of the people who died. Something the party, but especially Cloud, would not be prepared to do. Remember Sephiroth explicitly said his goal is to invent eternity. While Aerith said even if you think this would be a good thing, it's not the way things are meant to be.

The original had a coherent tone and pacing. 7R tries to be 4 different genres every 20 minutes while jerking off to its own lore rewrites.
