Switch 1 games on Switch 2
Is it true that unpatched Switch 1 games run in handheld mode and get 720p-to-1080p upscaled and thus look blurry?
Anonymous No.718393245
They're gonna look blurry anyway because they run as low as 480p in handheld mode
If you're serious about playing switch games in the highest possible fidelity, use switch oled or just emulate

dunno I don't play in handheld mode

Yes it is true, dunno why you'd ask /v/ instead of looking up on reddit (reddit is good for this kind of thing) https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/1lozh0p/i_love_my_switch_2_but_switch_1_games_look_quite/

If a Switch 1 game has a max resolution of 540p in handheld mode and 720p docked, the Switch 2 is not gonna change that if there are zero dedicated patches. Switch 2 does however remove the adaptive resolution (a game dropping in screen resolution in order to maintain the framerate) so you will get the max resolution all the time instead. Same thing with the framerate, if the non-patched Switch 1 game was locked to 30fps then the Switch 2 will stick to that by default.

really? i hope they release a lite version for switch 2 as well
i just don't like the big size
i prefer to play on a smaller console with a screen that won't make the games look like crap

Yes and no. I'll break it down by mode
>TV mode
If the internal resolution of the game is 1080p, the Switch 2 only goes that far. If the game uses adaptive/dynamic res, it will stay in 1080p on Switch 2. When a game uses variable resolution if the framerate can't maintain 30/60FPS, the resolution drops to accommodate it. But when Switch 2 horsepower kicks in, the dynamic res won't drop.
>Portable mode
The Switch 1 resolution was 720p, whereas the Switch 2 is 1080p. If a Switch 1 game runs at 720p native, the Switch 2 stretches it to fit its 1080p screen. If the game is 540p native, it will stretch to 1080p. Think about it this way, blow up an NES/SNES game that was 240p onto a 4K TV and hit Fullscreen mode in one of the options. That's what's happening in portable play. Going from 720p to 1080p in the Switch 2 screen is fine, but lower than that and it's gonna be a problem without a patch.

A Switch 2 Lite that's portable only would probably be 350 dollars. They may or may not drop the 120hz screen.

does it look like a (crappy) bilinear upscale?

Most games don't even seem to be using the 120hz screen so it's probably not a huge loss.
