I really enjoyed this game. Had a lot of fun, thought it had some themes that led to some introspection and good music. Also appreciated that it kept most of the original game's structure while putting in some new bosses to think on.

Well the original composer of the soundtrack for OFF didn't allow Fangamer to use his OST for the remaster/official release.
So the whole soundtrack had to be redone. And it's mostly terrible

Toby Fox was brought on to do the battle themes, and his tracks are the only decent ones. They still aren't as good as the originals, but they are fine as a replacement.
The real shit tracks are the ones done by the other composers who destroyed the atmospheric tunes of Alias Conrad Coldwood and replaced them mostly with garbage.

But modders are at work right now to add the original soundtrack back in to the PC version

There's notes of concerns over capitalism or environmental degradation, religious overtones, a discussion about both euthanasia and the 'complicity' of the player in bad actions done in video games. It's a whole thing.

It's also a pretty literal story. Hugo is a boy who has magic powers, he created the Queen and the Batter as representations of his parents. He picked three friends to rebuild the world, but they got corrupted. The guardians and his mother abandoned Hugo to linger undying but perpetually ill in a dystopian future.

The Batter is Hugo's desire to end his own existence mixed with his perceptions of his real father, who was a bad man.
It seems that the villainy Hugo perceived in his father, and the neglectfulness he saw in his mother were baked into the personalities of both the Batter and the Queen

From what he said after it came out they were making a new OST, they sort of hand waved his concern verbally about the legality of the situation, but also refused to put into writing any protections for him in case any of the IP owners sought to sue.

I played through the first zone of the remaster so far. Compared to the FD version, nothing sticks as a weird translation. Sadly, as expected, Dedan's sailor mouth has been greatly nerfed. He no longer says retard or cunt and I think his lines are shorter as a result. I think the flow of battles is better. You can set the battle speed to be much faster, which paired with the ATB makes them more of a scramble. Nothing too challenging, but still a slight improvement. This also makes the easy fights go by quicker. I also find the newer pause menu more appealing than the standard rpgmaker 2003 of the original.
One thing I don't like is the new borders. I think they are too cutesy and colorful, and clashes with the game. You can turn them off and leave the background black.
There is already a music restoration mod that lets you play with the OG soundtrack. I don't think it is a horrible way to experience off, but so far, I also don't think it is $15 better than the free version. Maybe the secret bosses will change my mind.

I think it's better to meet the game where it's at. It's not a game where romance plays a central part. It's just a backdrop for interactions between certain characters.
