I think they just didn't do a good enough job of making people care for Lumiere. The prologue wasn't enough time to learn about the civilization, everyone dies immediately. you made the right point and somehow didn't even realise it. The game does sidestep the question, it even has a dialogue scene that basically says "many have pondered that question for years, but it doesn't matter". Because that's not what the story is asking. The story only possibly works if the world in the painting is just as real and important as the world of the painters. Otherwise it's just a story that wastes your time for 70% of the time and then reveals the "real" story which is just a straight line to the part where you get out of the insignificant fake world since your consciousness told you that you shouldn't care about it.

Renoir and her both enter at the same time, in the same shot.
In the very least, Renoir walked with Alicia to the grave, as Aline approaches from the opposite side, meeting them there.
Renoir also has to reconcile with Aline, so idk how they want him to divvy his time, but just because he didn't focus on Alicia at the grave, doesn't mean he doesn't care about her.

Say they make multiple games, I think it might be neat to be able to build a picture of the real world by getting small pieces of information about it from the games.
