Aline was at fault for staying in the canvas and forcing Renoir’s hand. All the while, making Painted Alicia suffer out of bitterness.

Renoir was at fault for the Gommage and basically being a mass murderer.

He's tired and needs a break.
Let the man have his coffee and croissant, then he will be back to retrieve Alicia before she can truly lose herself and perish in the canvas.
I'm sure it will cause another Painter's war that will last a century, but that's what fatherhood is all about.

Correct. Maelle's father is obsessed with tradition and is stuck in his ways like an old man because they're sentimentally self serving to him, just like how he wants to get rid of Verso's belongings entirely to forget about him as he's dead. Maelle's mother is grief strucken and has completely lost herself in it. Both parents have failed their entire family and represent extremes, while Clea is the only one who's rational and empathic about it, who has basically not only taken over the family business duties, but also the parental duties by telling Maelle that it is fine to indulge once in a while as long as it's not too much.

The curator design is admittedly cool as shit, and I like how it results in a unique situation where a shopkeeper ends up being the final boss. I haven’t seen that in many games before.

I do wish he had like an ultimate final phase where he became an eldritch monster though. It’s practically JRPG tradition for final bosses to turn into giant monsters, afterall.

The boy says that Clea outgrew the canvas. She went to get more important friends were his words. Or something to that effect. Clea has fond memories of the canvas as a childhood hub of adventure but she has little to no actual attachment as it is. It probably is her own grief that is making her lash out instead of trying to help her own family, but her opinions on the canvas are pretty clear. You have to literally be a psychopath or autistic to not understand why Maelle/Alicia would fucking hate the life she has in reality and why she would choose the painted world instead. Its not about if shes right or wrong, you literally and i mean literally cannot understand why she feels the way she does. She has NOTHING irl. She lost EVERYTHING. Every time she looks in the mirror its not only a reminder of how hideous she is now but that her favorite person in the world is now dead and always will be. Grief and trauma do insane things to people, it makes PERFECT sense that she wants nothing to do with this, and instead wants to stay in the world full of people who love and care about her and the she loves too. When she wakes up as Alicia she makes the startling realization that she felt more like herself living as Maelle than she had in a long time in the real world.

what is your point? are you trying to insult people who pick what is largely considered the more thematically fitting and cathartic ending by calling them autistic because they dont understand that maelle/alicia is a mind broken child who cant handle her grief in a healthy way, as if that excuses her path of self-destruction and willful ignorance?
the actual true issue at the end of the game isnt verso vs maelle, it's whether it is morally correct to erase a world with sentient creatures with their own thoughts or feelings, or keep them around knowing they will never be divorced from the grief and control of this family of demigods
the real victims are the denizens of the paintings themselves, they either cease to exist without consent or get to live but constantly under the shadow of a retarded 16 year old god + whatever other impact from the rest of the family in the future

But Expedition 33 is based because it's one of those RPGs where the character relationship is just as fleshed-out and fulfilling if you skip the romance, rather than stopping abruptly or being way more phoned-in because they expect you to fuck all the girls. So it's based. The connection between Verso and Sciel, even without sex, is quite nice and endearing. I'd say no sex makes it even moreso.

She suffered a lot as Maelle too, never fitting anywhere, feeling that she didnΒ΄t belong... because, well she actually didnΒ΄t and only ever feeling loved by Gustave, whom she also lost just like Verso.

I wonΒ΄t say there is much in the real world for her, Verso is gone, Clea and her mother both blame her for that too and, in their grief have pushed her away even though she is the one suffering the most. Renoir is really carrying everything himself, stretched too thin while attempting to save everyone even though he is also suffering.

Is he wrong? Yes, but not really. He is trying to save his family so his heart is in the right place but he is also destroying the only thing left of his son. It probably pains him to do it but he has to save his family even if it means destroying the world.

Should Alicia return to her original world? I wonΒ΄t call it the real world and just assume we all agree that the world Verso created is as valid as the one outside the simulation and that everyone is equally alive.

I believe she should. She would certainly be happier inside the painting since she would be essentially a goddess and death would never touch her again there but thatΒ΄s not how people are meant to live. As part of the family she needs to help putting things back together. ItΒ΄s certainly unfair and will absolutely force her to grow up fast but for her own sake she shouldnΒ΄t avoid it. She can come back and see Gustave, Verso and the rest whenever too... she earned that right.

It's teetering in the edge of just giving up but it genuinely loves the world and all it's inhabitants, even the ones added by Aline because it views painting as a celebration of life (all of this said after clearing the flying mansion)
Renoir says they have made hundreds of canvases, sonits not like they're losing parts of themselves doing this, or they're all self destructing (otherwise they wouldn't be making so much goddamn money to live in a literal golden mansion) so clearly it's not a terrible situation

Gustave: Who are you?
Young boy: Me? A dream, an illusion… I don’t really remember. What I did all of this for… I miss… laughing with everyone…
Gustave: Who are you talking about?
Young boy: Re… Cle… What were their names? I… Why do I forget… Everything… Is washed away… (the boy has gone silent)
This was painted at a time when Verso was young and cherished by his parents, and spent a lot of time playing with Clea. Everyone's moved on. Verso is dead and Renoir and Clea aren't interested in playing anymore. He was sad about being alone before Aline ever took the place over with her woman moment.

Playing through the game in a straight forward manner makes it really easy to side with Verso and have no reservations because by then, the average player has completely forgotten about the time spent playing as Gustave, seeing the reality of the emotions, struggles, hopes and dreams of the painted world. They have completely forgotten about the countless lies and broken promises Verso has racked up ever since the first moment he appears. Remember what the average player sees right before getting to choose the ending is just this perspective:
>Renoir is a reasonable man just looking out for his family
>Verso is just a selfless man looking out for his mother (completely ignores all of his flaws and unforgivable heinous crimes)
>Maelle is desperate to not lose the thing that makes her happy, she sounds unreasonable and childish (Completely ignores all the reasons why the world could actually deserve to be protected)
>All other factors are totally disregarded, Lune, Sciel, Monoco, Esquie are excluded from the final decision and don't get any say on the ending

I think they just didn't do a good enough job of making people care for Lumiere. The prologue wasn't enough time to learn about the civilization, everyone dies immediately. The only one feels real is Gustave and he checks out without doing anything. After that everything hinting at humanity in the painting is just told through expedition journals which is just telling, not showing and can't portray the emotional punch as well. Act 2 doesn't have anyone with Gustave's spirit to carry on Lumieres legacy and the expedition plot starts to teeter away because you know there is something behind the scenes with Verso. Then Act 3 finally sidelines Lune and Sciel, it becomes the Maelle and Dessendre show. It's like Lumiere never mattered at all and the beginning stuff was just to hook you like a youtube thumbnail and stab you to make you feel the emotion of pain to get you invested

Aline was the only one well and truly addicted. If Renoir’s actions didn’t make it clear that he would destroy the canvas the moment Alicia left, he could’ve trusted her to leave and return of her own volition. Alicia’s never wanting to leave is a response to Renoir’s intent to never allow her to return.

tl;dr - Aline is a shit mother who made Alicia suffer unnecessarily even without trying to

I half-agree because I think they do a great job at making people care, they just don't remind anyone about it when the time comes to choose. I bet if you take all the playerbase and have them to watch the scene after the final Renoir boss fight then choose which ending they think is right, 70% would probably choose Verso. But if you make them watch Sophie's death or Gustave's death scene or Maelle's words at Gustave's funeral and then ask them to choose, that percentage would be vastly different.

you made the right point and somehow didn't even realise it. The game does sidestep the question, it even has a dialogue scene that basically says "many have pondered that question for years, but it doesn't matter". Because that's not what the story is asking. The story only possibly works if the world in the painting is just as real and important as the world of the painters. Otherwise it's just a story that wastes your time for 70% of the time and then reveals the "real" story which is just a straight line to the part where you get out of the insignificant fake world since your consciousness told you that you shouldn't care about it.

you have quite literally summed up the biggest issue with this games narrative and are either intentionally ignoring or severely underestimating how many people don't care about the ending because they can't get past the canvas not being real. there have been threads that would fill to the brim just arguing about it

If you're that philosophically handicapped then yeah you won't understand the game.

no we aren't talking about understanding or comprehension its about all the time spent within the story being worth it or not

This.
At the most I think some references to the Dessendre family would be fine, but that's about it. I'm talking like off-hand comment about shit like a fire or the head of the painter's council stopped showing up.

I'd like to see some small piece of lore added. Not the focus or anything, but just bits and pieces.
Say they make multiple games, I think it might be neat to be able to build a picture of the real world by getting small pieces of information about it from the games.
Not critical to any game, but enough to get an idea of like why the writers and painters hate each other. What does the Painter's council actually do? Are here other media people can jump into like music with musicians people being able to enter a record or instrument?

If your take is "It's not real because it's a painting" then yeah that is just a lack of understanding that makes it seem pointless to you.

I think it's people latching onto an inconsequential detail of the world because they lack imagination
I'd like another RPG but it shouldn't have anything to do with this story really, E33 is all wrapped up. They could do anything, writer world, sculpture world, even a completely different canvas by a completely unrelated character. Whatever they pick, the Dessendre's don't need to be involved

How could a Writer's Page or whatever even be represented in video game form without making it some kind of novel
