I don't doubt there's a lot of viewbotting especially when you get into the tens of thousand numbers. But at the same time, it's impossible to chat even if you had just 1k real viewers. It's not possible to communicate with others or the streamer at those numbers, so the only thing you can do is spam emotes or single letters like W.

But they can't all be bots, otherwise ad companies woldn't be paying, and no one would be profiting. There are a lot of streamers who have been doing it as a full time job for 5+ years and they average like 200-1k views at a time.

First of all, majority of the streams are under 100 viewers. Those big mega 1,000+ streams are like 0.01% of all streamers. You have to hit the lottery to be one of those guys.

Secondly, while some people do view bot, chat engagement varies depending on a number of factors. Like how interactive the streamer is with chat. If a streamer ignores chat, then people stop trying to interact and fall back into lurking. Or if the streamer is just kind of a low energy guy, then people go there to relax, not chat. Or if the content of the stream is too commercial, then people become detached and view it like they would TV, not interacting with it, just indulging passively.

It's normal that when you have a massive audience, a lot of them don't say anything, because they realize how fruitless it is, when their messages get lost in a flood of everyone else's messages.
When a streamer is still in the 100 and less range, you have a good chance of being seen, and the streamer responding to you. So smaller streamers have more activity, since you can actually interact.

OP maybe did encounter a botted stream, since they do exist. But then he went full schizo paranoia mode.

Most football watchers want to watch professional football. They are invested in the players coaches and the league. There is also history behind it. None of this translates to streaming. Most streamers aren't professionals at their game. Nobody watches hobbyist football.
