Elden Ring is still a shitty RPG.
Good action game, bad RPG.
The puzzles in particular bother me. Because there are flashes of cleverness involved, but so often its extremely droll.
Alexander needing you to use an oil pot to make him slippery so he can escape a hole in the ground is fun and uses combat mechanics in a basic but immersive way. Something that in another title wouldn't stand out, but in this game does because interactivity between the player and the environment via mechanics tends to be so rare. It is basically the only time that the game acknowledges the physics of its weapons or items.
RPGs as a genre are known for pioneering this interactivity and some games have really mastered it. But Elden Ring is far behind others for a game that ostensibly asks you to act like an adventurer. Instead the hyper focus is on combat within very specific and preset contexts, and everything else is secondary.
