The sales genuinely weren't a problem, it sold extremely well on launch and paid for itself, it really did. The problem is the fan reaction and its overall staying power. Any Starfield community is incredibly underpopulated and has this half-seething sentiment of "See? I'm still having fun!" Starfield was genuinely bad enough to affect ES6 pre-orders, it consumed a lot of the whole "It's a Bethesda RPG, I'm buying it" magic.
