When you don't speak a language too well you don't tend to read it subconciously, even if you can figure out the letters your brain doesn't instantly see them and make them into words
It absolutely works in another language and when intended for another audience

Look the game isn't exactly impressive with it's mysteries it mostly feels like they had one or two really neat clue ideas but then didn't know how to combine them, some murders are better than others
Literally this whole scene would make sense if they just established this girl is a foreign student from England or something so English is her first language and the one she would instantly use in a panic, but they wanted her to be the MC's childhood friend or something so eh, whatever
