i just played scv4 hard mode for the first time the other day, i got to stage a-1 i think and the extra enemies were making it run at like 1fps
what the FUCK were they thinking
there's one specific jump that's absolutely devilish, have to clear every single enemy in the stage just to reduce lag enough to get to the stairs before you're knocked off and even then it's fucking bad man

I did, the game was the easiest of any of the CV games while simultaneously being the most annoying and frustrating. Really just a shitty game that isn't enjoyable in any way.

>>718427716
except that isn't fun because it takes 5 years to swap, and you want to stick with one character due to how whip upgrades work (unless you are already know the game inside and out)

It doesn't take that long to swap characters. It could be faster, but it's only actually annoying if you're like trying to cheese Doppelganger(which is probably the worst part of the game so I would not hold it against you to cheese).
I never had an issue with whip upgrades making me refuse to switch characters. It has infinite continues so you can learn the levels as you go. You don't need to learn the game "inside and out".

I'm going to guess you think SCIV is one of the best of the classic series.

The point is that you don't want to ever swap back to Simon with a shit basic whip, so every single time you have to use useless Simon to start, upgrade his whip, and then swap back to Grant or whoever. Eventually, you realize that is tedious as fuck doing that after every one of the countless stupid cheap deaths in the game, and you just stick to one character or the other.

I just don't like the way CV1 and CV3 control at all, I hate subweapons requiring dual inputs and being unusable on stairs, I hate the fixed jump arc and very limited attack options, and CV3 feels worse in many ways (especially stair controls) and dials cheap bullshit up to 11.

It was somewhat acceptable with CV1 because it was original and innovative and the first game of its kind, but to then have the sequel that makes basically zero gameplay improvements aside from additional characters, somehow manages to fuck up the controls even worse, and the level design is overall not as strong while at the same time being more difficult than CV1, and also recycling a ton of the same enemies, monsters, power-ups, level desgins, etc. It just feels like an absolute slog to play.

oh also I hate the wall turkey mechanic of slowly checking every single wall in the entire game, and I also hate the subweapon implementation (no way to save or lock subweapons, random subweapons can drop right on top of you, even if you manage to avoid the drop they take forever to disappear, etc.)

All the later games fixed most or all of these issues so I prefer them.

That was never my experience. I never had an issue upgrading his whip and would switch back and forth depending on which character was better for what section while choosing subweapons that fill in for the other's weaknesses.

it's a terrible game and idk why so many people defend it, it has a bunch of blatantly shit sections where you just walk really far somewhere to do basically nothing, while nothing's happening, it's a nothinggame

2 is bad whether or not you are able to figure out where to go. Bad controls, bad enemy design, bad bosses, bad level design, tons of backtracking, just wholly irredeemable.
It's only worth it for the history in my opinion. There's a skeleton of a good game there but it's too ambitious for how primitive it is and feels incomplete.

64 is worth giving a try in my opinion. Most people understandably get filtered by the controls and camera but it's a pretty neat game overall if you get used to it. Not a masterpiece but not total dogshit like people said for the longest time largely because of an AVGN video.
Anonymous No.718436256 >>718436375

i don't understand this post, 2 is bad because of stupid backtracking but 64 is good even though it has way more backtracking through empty levels where every once in a while you'll hit a room where you need to kill the same 2 enemies you already killed 4 times, what's your logic for this
Anonymous No.718436375 >>718436864

I said 64 is worth giving a try and not a masterpiece, not that it's good. And the reason I think one is better than the other is because one actually has some good aspects to it to offset the bad parts instead of just being completely awful in every way.

i'm just going to respectfully disagree, if the stance is that cv64 is worth playing to see what it offered contemporaneously, it's in a significantly worse place than cv2, cv2 had 1 peer, cv64 had dozens, being released in 1999 it's completely flattened by numerous games released in the previous 4 years, whereas cv2 it's really just "well it's worse than zelda 2" but it's still a somewhat interesting game for what it was trying and while it's very easy, it's not like it's abrasively bad if you play with a retranslation

No, I think CV64 is worth giving a chance for what it's worth today, not for what it was worth for its time. As I said, I think 2 is worth giving a play to see what it's like if you are curious or care about the series as a whole but is an overall bad game both now and for its time.

Faxanadu had a UR release. And that was just one example of a similar game. There are other 3rd gen side scrolling adventure games like Clash at Demonhead or Blastermaster or the Wonder Boy series, or even Metroid itself.
But yes, if you narrow your view of games of that era to just a couple months then maybe CV2 is very unique for its time but I don't know what that's worth.
