I think nintendo never completely forget about their franchises even the most obscure and niche ones, it's just a matter of finding a team to develop a new game

Seeing how there's never been a Wario game anywhere near as good as Land 3 and 4 ever since they released, I get an odd sense that Nintendo is actively disinterested in Wario having good games and is intentionally leaving his platformer franchise hanging.

They just sorta stopped doing them when warioware became the main thing. There's even less incentive for Wario Land today since 2D Mario gets new games and dedicated handhelds are gone

messed with wario land 4 a bit recently and it seemed really interesting. the design language of the levels and wario's moveset is such a strong contrast to mario games. the levels are like miniature slices of nonlinear search action gameplay that clearly went on to influence the likes of spelunky, bite sized enough to not be annoying but still giving a sense of exploration and adventure

It was over when R&D1 got restructured/absorbed. Maybe they'll throw WayForward another bone, but I don't see Nintendo ever making a non-WarioWare game in-house ever again.

Meh I liked Wario 3s Metroidvania approach more than 4s kinetic level design, though I believe the mad dash to the exit mechanic could have been part.

Let's be perfectly honest, if Nintendo made Warioland today it would be impossibly gay and lame. Not even a shitpost, all of Nintendo's shit nowadays is focus tested / approved to fuck and back. Wario has no place in the current corporatized zeitgeist.
Same with the Tingle games, nobody remembers them but they were actually very similar to Wario games in spirit. Nintendo would never make this today.
