Technical mess, at least on PC. Gimped the physics in exchange for higher fidelity. Cut down on abilities in order to streamline the game. Otherwise, a much slicker combat and a well paced campaign.

They ignored continuing any of the actual story threads of the series (the first game and the comics after it) and just made some shit up, 180'ing Mercer's character in the process and retconning every open plot line out of existence.

PC was in a dire state back in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Piracy was fucking insane back then, I remember because I was one myself. I pirated EVERY fucking game in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. I remember Skyrim being cracked on the 10th by Razor1911 while the game came out on the 11th. Good times. PC gaming had a resurgence I would say roughly a decade ago back in 2015 and really became mainstream in the late 2010s.
