In theory it was weaker, but it was actually just GHZ e-peen measuring. PS3 ran about as well as a late 2014 phone if you want to regard processor speed as determiners. The Tri-core 1.24 GHZ processor in the WiiU was a total of 3.72GHZ at max speed, with only something like 2GB DDR3 ram, and one GB was used exclusively for the operating system. That's probably as good as it gets for anyone waving their e-peen around with numbers, because outside of that the console was fairly diverse and unrestricted in wireless options, portability and TDP (PS3's were YLOD all over the place by 2011, where Nintendo consoles never had a failure rate above 2%).
Anyway, the point I'm making is Nintendo tried to make better hardware an accessible option for consumers, but it didn't click. People just bought PS4's that same Winter, and when it became apparent that better hardware wasn't going to move units, they went back to their usual gimmicks of pushing demographics and narratives.
