Which Aladdin is superior?

I still remember the password to the last level of the SNES game to this day. Crazy how my memory is absolute dogshit for important stuff but I remember the most random useless crap.

I just played them back to back a couple weeks ago. The SNES game is more solid throughout but doesn't have the highs the Genesis does. Genesis fails on level design and the final boss is abysmal by comparison, but it feels like a better adaptation of the movie, and the gameplay on a fundamental level is more fun.

I always preferred Genesis because it was more action-oriented but they're both fantastic.

A cool fact about the Genesis one is that they brought on actual Disney animators.
For those of you under 30, you may be surprised to learn America was once capable of animation other than MS paint stoner humor.

For some reason the SNES aladdin soundtrack still gets stuck in my head decades later. Is there any decent track from genesis, because the few I've heard are fucking ear rapingly awful

SNES is the better game by far, but it's still just an average licensed platformer.
Genesis is not as well designed as the SNES, but it has way more personality and it absolutely feels like a playable version of Aladdin.

I wonder what it was like for cel animators to work on a sprite game. Do you think they just drew out traditional animations that the game artists then traced? Because if so, holy fuck do I want to see the originals.

they were mostly just pretty good (for Genesis) renditions of tunes from the movie. I can't recall the SNES soundtrack because I never really played much of that version but I would imagine it probably sounded better overall because the SNES just usually sounded better and much warmer in that regard. the genies lamp stage music on Genesis was ear rape.

Genesis Aladdin's spritework was full of Dover Boys-esque smears and funny in-between frames, I used to love pausing the game on them.

I remember when I was like 11 or 12 back in 1998 showing my great uncle this cheat and game. He was a brother in some ministry and all he could say was "you remember all that?" I nodded and he goes "gollllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee." I then proceeded to run around with an unlimited ammo minigun shredding the shaman priests. Kind of a strange choice now that I think about it.

Me. I played the Genesis one as a kid and the SNES one when I was a teenager after I bought a SNES at Funcoland. I prefer the Genesis one but the SNES one is great and while I hate being a fence sitter I would say either is a legitimate preference.

The Genesis game kind of stops adapting the movie after you're done with the Genie part.

Like you're still going through locations that kind of match the movie, but it pretty much gives up on the story before the ending. The whole "Prince Ali" part is outright skipped. You're in a stage in the palace going to show the lamp to Jasmine for some reason, rather than doing anything with it, then the text at the end tells you the lamp was stolen, leading straight to the final stage.

The SNES game is an actual complete movie adaptation that covers Aladin's return with the lamp properly with a prince Ali stage and cutscenes before the lamp is stolen leading to the final level.

There's not much of a Prince Ali section in SNES either. While you get the Whole New World fly through, you don't see anything else, and they instead opt to do some original level in a pyramid.

By 'better adaptation' on the Genesis, I'm including a lot of other facets aside from the story, like character designs including all of the unique palace guards, and the peddler. The inclusion of other tracks outside of Friend Like Me and Whole New World. Just the overall look of things like recreating the massive stalagmite the lamp sits on, instead of just plopping it in the middle of a path. The ending did suck hard compared to the SNES version, though.
