Discord killed the genre. MMO only existed for the social interactions but now that you can easily find autist to hang out with on Discord those losers don't need to bother with some game with dogshit gameplay with a social hub.

You team up with a cripple, an agendered person, an autist and 2 lesbians to protect a dragon that leaves a rainbow behind her from bigots. I wish I was making this up.

there was one before that i kept seeing during the storm legion expac. forgot the name though - i guess it shut down went rift went full f2p

I'd pay $30/mo for RIFT classic / first expac. $50/mo even. Shit was so much fucking fun, and then they trashed it all by going f2p and stuffing the game with microtransactions

Yep

It was discord along with more focused multiplayer games coming out. The pvp crowd left mmo for serious competitive titles, the social crowd left for social media and discord and the grindy crowd left for gachas.
The only remaining aspect that's unique to MMOs and not done better by a focused game is the economy.

That said, I think MMO had everything together in a single immersive package. It was special in a way that those other more focused genres can't replicate.
Its biggest downfall though, and also biggest appeal, was the amount of commitment needed. Games that require that level of investment just don't cut it these days, and if you casualize the experience too much the appeal is lost and you might as well just play another genre.
