MMORPGs
What MMOs are people playing these days? I'm super fucking bored of FFXIV. Tried WoW SoD when it was running and I did enjoy it but I got burnt out once I had to start grinding dungeons for BiS. Tried FFXI private server Horizon but it's too grindy. Tried GW2 but I hate the art style.

What the fuck is there? Is WoW Retail any good? I've never played it.

MMOs need to do something other than be a treadmill of grinding. Their past characteristics have been replaced by other types of games, primarily gacha and other live-services.
Someone needs to re-conceptualize what an MMO is supposed to be.

Not me though, I'm not going to try.

I honestly had more fun recently playing Valheim than I have with MMORPGs. They're missing the adventure part. They just feel like lobby dungeons simulators at the moment. Especially XIV, since you just stand in the city and queue for stuff. I'm really bored lately and trying to find new stuff. But I wonder if it's just all the same.

top MMOs are like BDO, FFXIV, WOW, Lost Ark. Though a large part of MMOs are the social aspects which have been taken over by other games. Namely the open world survival genre, or by simple chat windows in most games .

Is there a 3d mmo that invokes pic related?
>fantasy medieval town
>take posted quests adventurers guild
>buy gear and items from npcs on a market street
but you control the character and can fully roam the town (not still frame menus). and keeps the stakes low where you stay a lowly adventurer and not become the main protagonist overpowered champion. PSO 1 on Dreamcast comes to mind but that was sci fi

everquest is the only mmo that lets every merchant stay interesting due to them reselling items other players vendored to them

no idea why NO OTHER MMO has stolen this system, one of the first things I always check in all this shitty indie mmo's trying to copy EQ is if they properly recruited the merchant system and they never ever do.

FFXIV but I'm bored of it. At this point I just log in weekly for the recent alliance raid. Last year I finally decided to boycott Blizzard, so I'm not touching anything by them. I used to play GW2, but quit right before the 1st expansion, reinstalled it like 3-4 times since then, but after looking at my characters and the game I decided that I don't want to play it anymore. I don't like Korean MMOs, reinstalled BDO few days ago. Did like 15% of a level in 2 hours, turned off and uninstalled.

Right now I'm feeling an itch to play a new MMO. Something fresh that hasn't been resolved yet and not full of max level people. I missed on New World, because it looked dull to me, but maybe it would have fix my craving. At this point I'm even willing to play something like Aion 2 or Tera 2.

Speculation is easy to do, but I really think a game needs to lean on the second life-ism. By which I don't mean porn shit that'll come with the territory but rather to make them a bit like how I gather Fortnite was for kids: A hub where you hang out, chat, play conventional games with but also unconventional ones. I remember watching my friends play and the stream was something like a race where you pass through portals with anime screencaps - if you enter the right portal to the name of that section you progress, if you don't you start back at square one. As I understand it roblox is very much this, with players empowered to make their own fun.

Have that, but tailor it more towards adults and not children and nonces. You can see over and over how unbelievably clever and creative players can be. It's how the fucking MOBA genre was created, how battle royale genre was created (DayZ in arma). While indie development has mitigated this somewhat these are still great ecosystems to develop new content in. And when you see players make something real cool? Screen them and if it's all legit hire them and integrate it into your game proper. In XIV for instance players once did a soccer game with blue mage with nothing more than decorations and an ingame ability: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhwO09zM-78

Honestly a reason I never even tried second life was just the onerous way of actually picking it up. The WOW MMO formula is dead - just as the EQ formula was dead circa 2004. The problem is nobody tried/succeeded at a new formula, instead they all seem to just want to try and be reactionaries.

I played XIV but I've unsubbed for obvious reasons and I'll pick it up again with 8.0

Also meant to say that if you had this kind of garry's mod-esque formula then I'd bet that you would have seen amongus and Lethal Company "4 people get spooked" type games well before Amongus or LC came out. Indie games may have taken over the mantle of being a labratory for new (or revisited) game ideas but sufficient 'modding' can allow for it still. Setting aside that it's used by modbeasts and coomers it's still damn impressive what people have cooked up in XIV, from making it into an ingame blender studio to creating a peer2peer network to share mods. Like take that principle and make it less coomer oriented - imagine an MMO that let you create your own dungeons and raids and via that same peer2peer principle of Mare stream it/have people download it (or just fucking use steam workshop). People complain about lack of content? You've made it so they can make your content for you. Give shiny exclusive mounts and accessories or statues ingame for players who made award winning content
>And then have to remove and rename them after it's revealed they're a rapist or a molestor!

Like fuck man if XIV had the ability to make your own dungeons that would immediately solve one of the crippling issues of the game - lack of hard content that isn't static-rote-memorization based.

While BDO's combat was a bit flashy for me I still would have been willing to give it a greater try if Korean writing wasn't so fucking

I like the combat in Black Desert but the content sucks. I also hate that it's a bad thing to see other players in an MMO.. like yeah I get that it's supposed to be a PVP game, but they don't seem to want any open world PVP to actually happen. BDO with Guild Wars 2 open world content and like literally anything for better dungeons would be great.

I dropped the last of them, FFXIV and PSO2, recently. Looking at the autistic timesink shit on my friend's streams makes me glad I never fell for Lost Ark either. MMOs are no longer about the social experience they were drummed up to be, instead they doubled down on being raidslop and grindslop for automatons and young browns. >>718444639 got it. >MMOs need to do something other than be a treadmill of grinding.
Step away from things like item levels, seasons, ratings etc (basically all the bullshit that incentivizes mindless "number-grow-bigger" type grind) and go back to simulating a persistent fantasy/sci-fi world, where a player is a tenant, rather than the main character.
Then, make players actually interact with that world in order to progress. Like if you want to use like a group finder, you'd actually need to go to a tavern and pay for a table. Want to have a detailed map of a location - either travel there or buy one from a player who did and, say, trained "cartography" skill. Want to trade with other players - go to a market and so on
Avoid having having the entire focus of the game be only on the area added with the most recent update, making the rest of the world irrelevant.
Make non-combat skills, like trades actually important and valuable (for example, monstrous bosses should not drop gear, but rather rare crafting materials that a high-level crafter could turn into equipment).
There are probably more things you could do, but having something like this would be a good start.

The arms race against bots has been a disaster for mmos and the loss of this feature is one of the consequences. Merchants were used to muddle the origin of items and it was both easier and cheaper to remove that instead of adding yet another log system like player2player trading.
Same shit with dropping items on the ground, how often do you see that these days?

Multiboxing and p2w faggots with more money than sense are a huge issue in this game. And they always orbit one another, so if you run afoul of one, you will have run afoul of all of them and they will basically make sure you stop playing the game by ensuring you can never go anywhere without being killed.

MMOs haven't innovated in decades, and anything that was good about them has been casualized or stripped out for widespread appeal. But it hasn't worked for anyone because other game genres evolved and took all of the increasingly frustrated audience of MMO players. The hard shift to p2w everywhere has killed everything, nobody wants that shit clearly. MMOs are dead

I actually really like the art style but there is something autistic in me that doesn't like weapon swapping mechanics in MMOs, or any MMO that gives you too many weapons at once in general. Really silly autistic complaint but I had to say it. I still enjoy the games but I always unequip a bunch of stuff so my fashion doesn't look cluttered and bad.
Anonymous No.718457626
>>718457206
Not sure if it really helps but there are some builds that camp one weapon or have their weapon swap sets be identical like staff/staff mirage. I felt similarly when I started playing GW2 a few years ago but have eased into it. I still mostly stick to builds that tend to camp one weapon set or where it's not a huge loss to do so.
I just hate the tendency in MMOs for you to get a lot of tools, but instead of being utilities that you use when the situation calls for them you just hit everything off cooldown. The idea of picking two different weapon sets to cover different situations sounds cool, but ultimately what's expected of you is to grab the 2 highest damage sets and rotate between them to keep every cooldown rolling.

They're all very different from WoW/FFXIV's theme park raid focused endgame, and I play them for various reasons, which is why I move between them.

>What MMOs are people playing these days?
None. ARPG fans are eating well, with Poo1/2, Last Sleepoch, Grim Yawn, Diablo Bore, Shite Inquest 2, and others releasing new content, so that's what I've been playing. I'd love to be playing an MMO, but as others here have already pointed out, a lot of the adventure/ exploration/ rpg stuff is missing or merely window dressing for grinds & instanced, competitive-PVE content.

I might play Classic TBC in 2026, but my level of interest is pretty fucking low, currently.
