Nah, they’ll be fine with all the remakes and remasters. I’m not making this list up, this is just speculation based on how they usually announce merchandise for upcoming titles a few years in advance. XVII won’t happen until they’re done with 7R so it won’t steal the spotlight like they did with XVI by being superior to the mainline games.

After E33 and Persona proved you can market traditional JRPG's to normies and normie-weebs alike, there's no excuse for XVII not to try (and take only a couple years) if they're gonna continue chasing trends for mainline FF after being a GRRM-inspired action game, an open world boyband sim and a streamlined J-pop corridor all failed. Then again the Square-side never learned and took Enix bailing them out to continue existing to this day so I wouldn't hold my breath.

I'm still pissed IXR (proper remake, not whatever the fuck VII is doing) got cancelled.

The only culturally relevant game SE released in two decades was Nier Automata. instead of capitalizing on that with either sequels, or by putting Taro Yoko in charge of other big IPs, these bugs just whored 2B out to the entire world and sent Yoko to mobile hell.

Seeing Expedition get so popular now is particularly funny since Square used to be the king of that kind of semi-linear, cinematic JRPG with turn-based combat. They turned their backs on the genre to trend chase, and now have to watch a studio with not even 1/10 of their budget get all this popularity, while their attempt at broad appeal keep failing miserably. It's beautiful.

I don't know, SNES/PS1 era JRPGs just felt a lot different to me, technological advancement was not very nice to the genre. At least that's how I feel. It's like they didn't scale up very well. Most JRPGs take you on a journey across an entire world and in most of my favorite PS1 JRPGs you actually get to visit all regions of a world, you get a world map to explore with hidden locations and shit, you open up new ways to travel on the map and so on. Modern JRPGs in comparison feel like you only get a few slices of a bigger picture while the rest of the world is inaccessible. You are teleported from one region to another, if you're lucky you're given a semi open world and maybe some NPCs speak of other regions that you can never actually access in the game. DQ11 actually felt like an oldschool JRPG and not just because it stuck to the 4 niggas in a row formula.

Most JRPGs started looking like shit with the jump to full 3D. Stylized graphics of the old, like pre-rendered backgrounds or anime sprites, were very good at keeping them visually appealing and charming without being as resource intensive. To replicate something like FF9 in the standard of today you would need red dead redemption levels of 3D talent.
