That's the point, it's cathartic. If you play a happy game it won't change your mood it'll just feel fake.

The game's themes of depression and tragedy are regularly talked about and advertised, so why would you get a game about depression if you didn't want to play a game about depression? Some people aren't depressed, and playing games about depression lets them feel emotions they don't often get to experience.

Gods I loved this game, especially the soundtrack
Anonymous No.718452631
I loved this game but the ending was so bad lol. So contrived. I was half expecting a piano to fall out of the sky and land on Maelle's head because why not, that's miserable right? But I suppose it is the French, a people to whom nihilism is considered a virtue

People who cry over Expedition 33 are mentally challenged and should seek more education and story comprehension immediately.

Protip: The next time you see an Expedition thread, look at the posts.
Most of the posters have blatant misspellings in their posts. Capitalization and punctuation is forgotten, and Youtube-style idiocy is emphasized.

This exemplifies the low intelligence level of Expedition fans. It isn't without reason either.

Expedition is simply a story that was overly dramatic and tragic, a story that should've appealed to anyone with a sense of heart. However, most people have seen this strategy in the forms of books, movies, real life, or some other medium.
The dramatic, tragic story has been done many many times, and an over-dramatized death of a character should no longer affect the intellectual in a drastic way.

However, Expedition's target audience consists of 13 year old boys who have never experienced higher forms of storytelling. If one were to watch Expedition without having experienced stories with sadness in them, they would use It as the base value for the genre. However, if one were more educated on the aspects of dramas and tragedies, one would regard Expedition as a poor attempt to appeal to their audiences.

Once the dramatic and tragic elements of Expedition are removed, the remaining dregs are composed of cute girls and pitiful comedic scenes. Essentially, this is what Expedition is to the educated and informed. A simple show which has no appeal whatsoever. However, to the uneducated, Expedition represents a new flavor of game they have just experienced.

Your post doesn't mention music, which is the entire appeal of the game. The gameplay and story are a vehicle to deliver the soundtrack, which is what most fans seem to praise the game for.

Anonymous No.718455213
It's a huge downer, which makes all its attempts at comedy kinda hilarious.
It's also part of the reason why I'm not upset about the twist: the world is mega fucked.
For a JRPG everything in this game is shockingly grim.

I agree, as far as gameplay goes it was the best thing I've played in a while, but much of the writing was irritating and very millennial, and the less said about the direction that the story decided to take in the final few hours the better.

its a cool game but it does feel like some kind of weird spiritual demoralization propaganda to lay the groundwork for "medical assistance in death" and/or a high casualty military stalemate over the next 5-10 years, normalizing the idea of dying for the greater good etc..
i'm prob just a schizo tho

I think the big problem that I had with the story is that it asked me to suddenly prioritise the Dessendres, a family of demigods who appear to have a moral compass so far removed from mine or the characters I've spent most of the game with. This is shown by their willingness to create and destroy universes of sentient, intelligent life for their own convenience or amusement - and also by Clea's decision to put her little sister into a painting for SIXTEEN YEARS, from which she emerges at the end of the game as if she's simply had a nap. Seriously, what the fuck? These characters are so far removed from the human experience that I was completely baffled when the game seemed to expect me to agree that billions must die in order for this family of greek gods to sort out a quarrel.

By that point in the game their predicament is more interesting than the main characters', that's true - I would be interested to see what kind of story a sequel would have and what would be done with the 'writers', because the concept sounds really fucking cool, but yeah the game's implicit argument that the lives of everyone in Lumiere and it's existence altogether is entirely subordinate to the world of the Dessendres and thus disposable at convenience sat really strangely with me

the best way I can describe the writing is that's serviceable. The characters say and do what you would expect characters like them would to say and do in a story written for tv. None of them have an individualized enough personality to actually stand out as human beings. And the moment-to-moment of the narrative itself is not engaging enough to carry their lack of personality.

The combat though like you said is very satisfying. Especially if you play on the highest difficulty and try to beat the optional bosses early on.

It would be extremely difficult, which makes it even more confusing as to why Clea would inflict this on her sister as casually as she does in the flashback that we play briefly. The more I think about the shit that happens in this story the less it makes sense
