I don't think mech games need complex controls. Mechs are rarely portrayed as being super difficult to handle, if they're not straight up shown ramming the stick forward to do pretty much anything they need to do because the controls don't mean anything.

its just difficult to nail a proper tone that suits "committing wholesale murder while running around in a mech" set up. brigador has synthwave tunes with cyberpunk setting, and gundam:thunderbolt has jazz. that works to their strengths when producing their mech related media. if you have no aesthetic to keep people engaged with your mech IP, you wont last long.

I could see how being turn based would work for a really big and slow super robot. Something to the scale of mecha godzilla or the titans from warhammer would probably feel better turn based than as painfully slow real time games.
