Rebuild 3 is significantly different but still fun. Instead of number of survivors being a stat, you instead get units on a map you can move around like a chess game. It's better than it sounds. And the main game is a campaign where you carry over the protag and 4 survivors after each game.

I always wonder about these threads, do you guys miss the actual culture of places like newgrounds, or is it just pure unadulturated nostalgia for the specific games you played as a child with 0 unironic or "pure" appreciation for the genre as a whole?

I'm asking because if it's the former then what you might not realise is that itch.io is the modern equivalent, if you want to try these types of games, just made in engines that are actually designed for games, that's the place to be.

Anyway the best flash game series has to be henry stickman, that's clearly the one that has real staying power.

You might want to check out "Sands of the Coliseum" too, similar gameplay loop with wave-based gladiator fights and upgrade systems. Chain axe sounds unique though-starting to think whatever that game was, it might've been an indie sleeper that never made the rounds outside of a few flash hubs.

The 3rd game for this expanded a ton on the first two mechanics wise but I'm still not a fan of the moblieshit artstyle. The first one was really cool with that scratchy looking comic book style that you see briefly in the cutscenes when you wipe out the Last Judgement gang and the rolling zombie defenses. The bad ending involving the death cult where your people start throwing themselves off the walls was spooky as shit and the pictures really depict that event well. It still lives rentfree despite playing it ages ago at this point.

It's okay for the QoL improvements like being able to produce most of what you need compared to the first game where scavenging was the mainstay. Making ammo, medkets, zambie brain bait, pipebombs etc. I'd say it does the civil administration, trading and faction warfare parts a lot better by comparison with the societal mandates. One of the better city builders/zombie defense games once you understand how everything goes then it becomes a map painter where you can turtle or just strafe the enemy with conscripts hanging off the backs of armoured trucks and Harley Davidsons. But that artstyle really doesn't do it any favor I can only assume they did it to differentiate the randomly generated NPCs via body shapes and character type. Rather than sharing the same Syphon Filter face slapped on penguin suit or some weekend camo gear.

I miss the games. A lot of the more popular ones are starting to make the jump over to other platforms like Itch and Steam because the formula they had is still good. I haven't seen Mastermind and Oiligarchy do that yet. The former still has some top quality VA despite being a flashgame. Each pastie having their own voice and the Mastermind himself running through a ton of lines for variety sake.

Someone else brought back Age of War on Steam but now the AI won't build turrets so it becomes a compstomp once you move into the future age with ion emplacements. I played on GameGarage mainly. It's a sad nostalgia whenever i revisit.
Since we're all trying to remember our old favorites, there was a duo of games I liked that had you take control of a prince to fight invading forces, running back and forth across the screen. You could pay to summon soldiers too, and the final level gave you griffins. The sequel had you playing as the son of the previous protagonist.

No no no no no. Wrong, wrong, wrong. It's come to my attention that you're not measuring up. You'll need to stay late. Again. With no overtime. Your project has to be completely redone. You can't seem to do anything right. Oh - I'm gonna have to write you up again too. You're just not measuring up. That's three more demerits this week. Did you get the memo about the paycut? 10% across the board. We've got to cut back, it's the bottom line, you see. And your insurance copays? Yeah, they're going up. Better tighten your belt. We're merging with a bigger company. There's gonna be one flavor of ice cream, one brand of coffee, one car. There's twenty people waiting for your job. One third of Americans work for less than $8.50 an hour. Get used to it. Be happy with what you got. You'll have to play catch up on the weekend, with no overtime pay of course. You're not meeting your quota. What's that you say? The quota's impossible to meet? Duh. Here's how it works. I sit in my office; my corner office, and I do some simple math. I look at other companies similar to ours. I get stats, I take a nap...(burps) I crunch some numbers, and if the figures show it's only humanly possible for one person to complete, say, 10 projects a week...I double it. and that becomes your new quota, 20 projects per week. Simple. Of course it's impossible. That's the whole point. Gotta keep you on edge. We'll give you some malarkey about setting the bar high, meeting goals, etc., but that's not the real reason. We've got to keep you in fear. Fearful people develop low self-esteem. Thus, they'll never ask for a raise. What? ...You want a raise?

>to this day I still never beat it
There's actually a shortcut all the way to the final level you can do from the very start. I like how the game rewards you for knowledge if you played it before. Repeat playthroughs are fun as you can do any level in any order.
Actually I'm trying to think I might've just stopped playing as soon as I got to the final level as its long as shit and really difficult? Don't remember.

>Remember entering a flash thread on /v/ last year
>Eventually pivoted to talking about Zone's Sakaki flash and some anons asking if anyone have it
>Rename Successfull_Troll.swf to Zone_Sakaki.swf and upload it on >>>/f/
>Fooled a bunch of anons
The saddest part is, after 4chins got hacked due to mod and Hiro incompetence they decided to permanently kill /f/ by not allowing anyone to upload anything anymore, you can still go to it but you wont see anything new* uploaded.

i'm still coping about it coming back since the board is still up.
it's so stupid to shut down /f/ just because they were using outdated software to screenshot PDF files.
they aren't screenshotting the flash files and verifying that someone have uploaded a swf file is just as insecure as verifying that someone has uploaded a jpg file. there's no security gain in killing /f/.
stick it on a different server from the rest of 4chan if you're super paranoid, there was so few visitors at the start of this year that an old laptop running in someone's closet would do just fine to host it.

With how outdated the software and FreeBSD install was? I genuinely can't even cope about it coming back, the mods (and they are the ones running it, Hiro probably just collects the money to keep living in France) really couldn't care beyond the paycheck they get from ads and 4chan pass money, yeah mods are actually paid and it's anywhere between 2k-5k depending on their position, jannies still don't get paid.

keeping /f/ functioning isn't a risk, it's nuts they thought it was. the board was one of 4chan's oldest and made some very unique OC over the years, I think it deserves a little bit of effort to be kept online.

Flash games must've been an almost universal constant with how low the barrier to entry was compared to normal vidya. Hell you could grab the swf files wholesale and slap them on a cheap 1GB flashdrive like I did growing up. If you couldn't afford the net you get a bunch of them and the standalone player. Free vidya for a fraction of the cost.
