But I think the rewards for doing those tasks are actually pretty strong. At least in most cases.

V with VP brings a new spark of life, new units, new mechanics and way better AI integration and diplomacy.
No longer you have AI with 50 happiness refusing to trade you a luxury resource, also resources price varies with age and friendship. The whole game feels more dynamic and functional.

I can't. It's sad to see a once beloved franchise go down like this. On the other hand, it's also a bit poetic to see it become such dogshit at a time western civilization has gone to shit.

Events and decision trees have ruined this genre and grand strategy. I predict in 10 years or so we'll have the ultimate "4x" that's just an unholy combo of Rimworld, Stellaris, and a Roguelite deckbuilder which will be praised for the innovation of not moving any units yourself, and everyone will talk about their "stories" when every game basically plays the same despite the 4,000 different decision popups you can make.

Maybe next installment they'll have someone at the helm who doesn't try to leave his mark on the franchise by stripping everything Civ was good at away to ape failed Civ killers.
