No, the indie scene is fine enough and has largely replaced/emulated the best of smaller teams putting out passion projects in the past. Videogames have always been a big bucket of 90% shit fighting games and mascot platformers. The problem is that it makes too much money now, so every single major company has restructured towards methods of pure business optimization that doesn't actually work.

No one takes gambles, no one experiments, it's business faggots swearing their new title is simply too big to fail. None of this has anything to do with whether they read the hobbit or whatever. All the best devs back in the day were weird turbo-nerds too, anyway.

Almost anyone in any major decision-making position in videogames doesn't even play them. They're in the business of selling crack, not taking it. Think of the guys asking whether they can charge players per reload. They've got nothing to do with nerd hobbies or culture in the slightest.

Anyone still making MUDs or dungeon crawlers or whatever else is still gonna be cut mostly from the same cloth as anyone who's ever made them. They're just a smaller element of an unbelievably overgrown beast now.

What video games did you play today? I bet the only thing you play is piss easy console games and casual RPGs, if anything at all. Metroidvanias are the most casual style of platformer, and there are only 2 decent Castlevania games, none of them great.
