Fortnite looks like a 2009 game and it makes $2b a year. League looks like fucking Warcraft 3 (less now than on release) and it pulls in a billion annually.
Games that push visuals are hard to make, take real talent, and require an investment on behalf of the consumer that evidently they would rather spend on skins for a character 96 pixels tall.
There's already so many polygons on screen and have been since like Skyrim and The Last of Us. When you already have 2 million polygons and you add another 2 million you won't see a big difference, at least not enough to warrant the massive processing power required to double your on-screen polys. Whereas the jump from 800 polygons to 1600 was much more noticeable to your eyes.
