the "combine" like the for real entity or organization that runs everything i'm pretty sure is either some god-like, haywire artificial intelligence, or judging by the name it's some xen-like higher lifeform that has formed a collective of itself possibly from the entirety of its species. with their penchant for horrifically cyborg-ing every other species they meet i'm guessing they are mechanical or otherwise artificial in nature

the game glosses over it pretty hard philosophically speaking but next to all the water being sucked off the planet and replaced with the poisonous, industrial byproducts created by the very same machines sucking all the water, this is definitely the scariest part.

your own planet gets wrecked in a war with aliens and within just a few years time a double digit percentage of the remaining population are a bunch of literal zogbots for the aliens; and of those zogbots, half of them personally enjoy tormenting their own species as they all march toward extinction, and the ones that aren't, are so braindead and filled with electronics that they aren't even human anymore - so they don't feel any enjoyment from brutalizing you but they also do not and will never again have any moral qualms about doing it, zero hesitation

it may be one of the most bleak video game universes ever made

there's graffiti around parts of HL2, usually urban stretches of maps where you enter or pass by or through infrastructure and buildings, and one of the artworks depicts a human wearing the mask in a profile view. the mask is suffocatingly tight and by the time you reach overwatch status in their military hierarchy they've lopped off half the back of your head to fit it into the helmet and removed your eyes to instead see out of some interface on the suit
