It's been so long that I don't remember, but I recall that Valve said at the time that the episodic format would allow for faster releases of new games... so why did they stop at 2? What sort of impediment did they find along the way? Was it a technical thing?

Releasing it nowadays WILL carry a lot of expectations, but I feel like if they just sticked to the plan and just released the damn episode 3 1~3 years after episode 2, it would most likely be well received, and nothing would've changed much for Valve: they'd still own steam, they'd still be loved, they could've kept pumping out new games in the series... so why? Why didn't they just release it back then?

The devs burned out after working on HL games back to back and the Left 4 Dead project gained a lot of momentum, so they decided to work on it instead. By the time they were done, the window for episodic release had long passed.

It turns out episodic development doesn't actually make development faster and in fact cab even make things worse. Beyond that valve has a very weird development model where devs can start and stop working on anything they want as long as they're doing something. So after a few false starts enough people moved on to other projects and HL3 got shelved.

The hype is gonna kill any possible enjoyment
Nothing is going to be good enough as we expected after all these years. And as many anons said already, unless you put some sort of long recap at the very start (which already is kinda lame, those sequences usually suck), no one will know/remember/care about what the fuck happened so far between the Humans, the Combine, the Vortigaunts, Aperture Science, the cake, etc.

I know they will never let it die because at least an ember can still warm the hearts of whoever oldfag is still around playing vidya, but in all truth i would prefer if, backed up by money, they finally dared to make some NEW games, NEW attempt at franchises, instead of yet another remake, another remaster, or in this case a sequel no one will enjoy at this point

The HL2 tech demo on E3 was mind blowing to everyone there yet it was things that existed and were doable for a while, Valve employees were worried sick because they thought it was boring and wasn't enough at the time yet it mind broke the entire convention.

>>718506626
They LITERALLY SAY MULTIPLE TIMES ON THE HL2 ANNIVERSARY VIDEO that the story for Half Life games happens as the game evolves.
There's no set story or draft, at the absolute most there's a very basic skeleton but the devs work out levels and ideas first and then things are written around them.

You niggas really need to go watch that fucking video because apparently only like 2 of us in the thread have despite answering almost all things half life related on the past 20 years and the future of HL.

But I'm not, I'm explaining to you why it was never that far ahead and why it was never the HL3 story at any point because HL3 was never ever that advanced, the gameplay never got to the point where they would reach that level of writing and we KNOW straight from Laidlaw and the devs that the writing serves the gameplay and comes after.

At the absolute best case scenario for this story it might have been a partial, unfinished cobbled together mess of like 8 different possible directions the story could've gone for and most importantly, it was a defeatist allegory by Laidlaw that he alone couldn't fight a titan such as Valve which apparently flew over everyone's head.
That's why he regrets it, that's why he deleted it, that's why he's back on Valve, it was a rant veiled as writing.

I think it is not a good idea, but what if they restarted the franchise? Would that work? Would that make new people hyped about the franchise, as well as the old fans?

I don't like the idea because it'd feel frustrating to see the one we know never even ending. Plus, it would feel a bit uninspired, to se et another remake of an old franchise.

There's a chance yeah, it's valve, they restart shit all the time.
But the game getting leaked/soft closed alpha tested most likely avoided it, I wouldn't be surprised if there was whispers of the game getting cancelled like countless other valve projects we've never seen but one or two disgruntled devs leaked it in protest/anger/frustration and ended up picking up steam after the initial disgusted reaction by most people.

I don't think Valve would really care that much about the game selling 50 million or 25 million, they don't need money anymore and they don't owe anything to any stockholder which has been a curse and a blessing.
Obviously they want fucking money, but the game would sell a shitton regardless and the company is not gonna go under if it doesn't sell 10 million more units.
HL Alyx has sold around 3ish MILLION units despite being a fucking PC only VR exclusive game needing ideally an Index.
The public is dormant but not dead, there's not much fanfare BECAUSE there's no activity whatsoever, but thinking that an official reveal of HL3 wouldn't break the internet is just retarded.
