It had the best graphics of any CRPG.
It had the best tabletop-style gameplay of any graphically impressive game.
It drew in both casuals looking for a movie-game and RPG fans looking for something that looked good.
It also benefited from a good marketing campaign. It was early access, which people usually hate, but they gave extremely consistent and long dev talks on the updates compared to most early access bullshit. Not everyone liked every change, but everyone who cared was kept apace of the changes really well. They released a few cinematic trailers to build hype, had a tabletop module prequel made, and were making a sequel to two incredibly popular older games.
They didn't do everything right, but they did a ton of shit right for the broadest audience.

I find it odd that most stuff in fantasy is explored through fantasy concepts, like racism between elves and humans, and then gender stuff only ever seems to get explored by just wholesale plopping real life gender junk in there. I think people would find it way more palatable to play a story where some character is struggling with wanting to have some identity that they weren't born into using fantasy stand-ins instead of just writing a scene that could be word-for-word the same in some American sitcom about a trans kid. If you play with the Dark Urge background, which is "canon" background meant to be analogous to the Bhaalspawn protagonist from BG1 and 2, Enver and Orin both make a big deal about knowing who the player character is already, and why they care about messing with them on a personal level outside of just trying to get the magic jewel mcguffins.

Larian just also loves doing the whole "you can play as a companion too" thing so they wrote the story to fit with any of them as the central character and potentially leave out a Bhaalspawn entirely, meaning most of the Act 3 villains are just random guys to you. The story is best as Dark Urge, in the way you're talking about.

Because being woke is just a symptom of a cynical game dev (or publisher) looking to cash in by pandering to those demographics, in a very unsubtle way (which is why you are often so constrained in your choices and it feels like they are pushing for a specific narrative).
Baldur's Gate 3, instead, is a game with a clear vision, that actually lets its players take their own conclusions from what they get shown and then provides a variety of options to deal with it in a way you feel appropriate.
Not to mention that even the "woke" elements are much better integrated than something like, say, Veilguard.
tl;dr: Good writing, player's choice and not feeling constrained by a specific narrative pushed by the game dev.

No. Characters are usually static in classical style "heroic" literature, and games can adapt the style easily. People just usually aren't going to praise the story much unless there's a big twist or something. These types of stories are usually reserved for pulpy stuff now though, because character development-driven stories are just way more popular and the goal is usually (at least in part) to sell copies. Conan the Barbarian is a great example of a well-known somewhat modern example of classical style heroic literature. In it, the conflict is usually resolved by the hero overcoming obstacles or enemies, and not by growing or attaining new power. If you go read the actual Robert E Howard novels, they're pretty much all like that. The movies are not, most likely because they wanted to make the stories more popular, and thus added a character arc for Conan.

Some older examples of games that jumps to mind are ActRaiser and Ecco the Dolphin. Th hero of ActRaiser doesn't develop or have much personality at all, but people usually think the story is pretty neat because you progress through the game acting as god and it culminates in a cosmic battle with a stand-in for Satan or an evil god. Ecco the Dolphin is similar, but the final part is about saving the other dolphins from eldritch aliens. I feel like both games get a lot of praise for a narrative that is almost completely devoid of character development.

I had the same reaction when I played it around release. I was always gonna buy it because I was obsessed with Forgotten Realms, and was bracing for the game to be really woke. I was surprised to find that pretty much everything I saw posted on /v/ was stuff I never ran into or completely overblown. I didn't see bear sex because I didn't try to fuck the big masculine elf guy (who turned out to be a complete Chad and I loved having him in the party). The drag queen turned out to be a random NPC in a literal circus freak show who is also shown to be a degenerate necromancer, and isn't part of a questline as far as I could tell. The other stuff was pretty much all the same, either throwaway lines posted for rage-bait or homo-sex that was easily avoided by just telling your companions you don't wanna do dance or look at the stars with them.

Larian had to negotiate really hard to convince WOTC to let them use the Baldur's Gate IP. They got denied every time they asked until after Divinity OS2 came out and was a pretty big success for a CRPG at the time.

You can see in this financial report that Monopoly Go! contributed 112 million dollars to their revenue for 2024. BG3 made them about 90 million. BG3 probably cost Larian a fuckload of money to develop, had to rely heavily on funds coming in from early access, and got lucky that it paid off. It was a high-risk play from WOTC that worked out in lending out the license. WOTC doesn't give half a fuck about letting anyone use the license again when they can make even more money from a fucking phone game.
