Its because towards the end of the game enemy hp is so large that actually engaging in combat is a net resource loss the entire game turns into stealth or hit and run with shock to loot weapons then run away. Also ATK up armour is effectively mandatory unless you go out your way to farm mighty bananas because of the durability system.

It's meant to create a sort of scavenging playstyle where you use what you find in the moment - personally I think the fact the game even lets you store weapons at all is already a huge advantage.
It's like a modern shooter where you get two weapons at most and once you run out of ammo you look around for another one rather than relying on a stockpile in your inventory.

You say that but you don't think it through. For example, I find a Royal Greatsword, a solid mid tier weapon. Now if I continue to play normally then at best I may find a Moblin or a Bokoblin with a Dragonbone weapon. Now these aren't terrible in and of themselves but no Dragonbone weapon is going to compare to the Royal Greatsword I expended to get it. The only monsters in the overworld with something comparable would be the Lynels. But we're just kicking the can down the road at this point. If I want an equivalent exchange of weapons, then the ONLY creatures I can fight are the Lynel. Other than that, I can hunt down strong Guardian shrines or allow my best weapons to gather dust in my inventory. Every single engagement in Hyrule of the Wild is an opportunity cost and the majority of the time it just isn't worth it. So I have to keep a supply of garbage weapons I can use to justify combat with fodder enemies. Who the hell plays Zelda this way? Who the hell plays ANY video game this way? The whole point of getting the Master Sword in every other game is that you are now more powerful than you were before. Even if there were more powerful weapons in a particular game, each upgrade was a power milestone. But in Hyrule of the Wild, all your milestones are acquired in the first 2 hours of play. And the rest are temporary boosts that you have to convince yourself to use

I do think there is a certain psychological component to it.
In shooters you aren't replacing most weapons whenever they run out of ammo since, at least for the more common ones, refills are plentiful and you may get to keep your favorite weapon for extended periods of time.
In BotW you just get an extra copy of the weapon, so even if you have a bunch of the same weapon you're still gonna lose the one you've used no matter what.
While this ensures you're always playing at max efficiency when it comes to resources, it does make the weapons feel a little less personal.

I didn't even care about the degradation, other than it's blatantly unbalanced and ultimately pointless. What I hated is that there's nothing in the game even worth breaking your weapons on. All the enemies/bosses are boring as fuck and none of Link's attacks are fun, if that makes sense? The weapon types all have really dull movesets, bullet time was a stupid addition, and the Sage Powers were gayer than Witcher Signs.
Just a really goddamn boring and motivationless experience, even storywise. I legitimately could not give less fucks about Zelda or Hyrule as a whole, they're so emotionally destitute.

Samefaggot. Swords do not consume ammunition the same way guns do. Guns fire a limited number of projectiles stored in the magazines. The gun is a medium for projectile to reach its target. Swords are thematically and fundamentally different from firearms. A sword can be valued based on its reliability while a gun is more likely to be valued based on its convenience in the moment

Again, you're unable to look at things as video game mechanics.
As far as a video game is concerned, what is the difference between a gun in a shooter and a sword in a fantasy adventure game?
Both are your primary method of attack, so why is it ok for the gun to be a limited resource but not the sword?
Keep in mind that in the real world swords break just as easily as they do in Zelda.

nah it's worse in totk because the weapons are by and large meaningless and samey

finding an elemental sword was cool in botw but in totk, the elemental sword is already in your materials pouch and all you're doing is just collecting handles to put it on

botw was never good at this but totk is even worse in that almost every single activity has no worthwhile rewards. there is no point opening a chest, a royal halberd and a knight's halberds are the same handles to put a lynel horn on and most of the time you get completely worthless shields and bows that you'll put back because your inventory is already full for the 50th time

once in a while, the handles do something different like a boomerang or an eightfold longblade, but they in no way justify how trash 90% of the fuse system is (on top of the shit ui)

Anything? I get l punished if I use "powerful" weapons, I get punished if I don't. Why even approach any mob ever? Which leads into my next question: When is there any potential context for "getting screwed"? You can outwalk any mob or individual enemy. There is virtually zero gatekeeping in the game. Combat is almost entirely optional, and the instances where it isn't, I.E. the boss fights, are all balanced for mid-range equipment you can find randomly, nevermind the Master Sword.
So... what exactly is the point of this mechanic again? If Hyrule were some crazy survivalist shit and traveling was genuinely dangerous and difficult (like the lore/story implies it should be) that would be one thing, but it isn't. Post-Calamity Hyrule is Sesame Street. Oscar The Grouch has more edge than any of the monsters. It's like playing an offline MMO, which makes sense when you consider Monolith Soft's involvement in the world design, because that's their specialty. Hell, it's the ONLY thing they do.

What part of "swords aren't guns" don't you understand, old man? They work completely differently. A gun has to carry a limited number of projectiles in its magazine. This is usually a tradeoff between different factors and drawbacks. Because most guns have to be portable, they will not carry an impractical amount of ammunition. Mounted firearms are the exception. This is consistent with both real-world and game logic, so it's a false equivalency on your part, retarded faggot. The only comparable fantasy weapons are bows and magic. But the difference between these and melee weapons in BOTW is that you can still use the former once you find the requisite ammo. BOTW weapons just break with no way to maintain or repair them

For what it's worth, Borderlands is an example of a game that does this. You have four weapons on rotation, do you use your world-ending nigger-obliterator with limited munitions on a bog-standard mob of psychos? No. But you can if a random spawn generates an upscaled/rare enemy, and after you're done? You still have it, you just need to resupply, and might end up having to restart the "level" if you reach the end and can't defeat the boss or didn't enough ammo spawns. Hell, depending on the difficulty you may not even have enough ammo period and need to upgrade your stock or actually farm better gear to progress.
None of that exists in BotW or TotK.
Can't believe I'm using fucking Borderlands as a positive example for game design. Randy save us.

Know what? Fuck it. I normally avoid this discussion because I cannot stomach Zelda fans and how they slobber all over these games.
The weapons break fast to keep you feeling "rewarded" when you pick up the same thing for the hundredth time. These games are designed to waste your time. And they do it very, very well. They keep you "engaged" in a "gameplay loop" where you're just repeating the same things over and over and over again. It's an actual video game skinner box.

I cannot comprehend how people can play these games and find enjoyment. The monotony. The repetition. The blandness of it all. It truly is for the brain dead among us. Which is a staggering number of people considering how popular these shitty games are. The gameplay is Ubisoft tower slop with a splash of boring crafting and mediocre combat bolstered by a decent physics engine.

These games suck. People who play these games are dullards; truly the dumbest among us, right down there with people who buy annual FIFA and Assassin's Slop installations.

It's a really weird argument to make because the games only get easier the more you play them unless you're deliberately handicapping yourself.
The hardest BotW ever feels is in the beginning. By the time you have some armor upgrades, meals and fairies backed up you start to feel untouchable against all but the strongest enemies.

>let's make a weapon durability mechanic
>but then never allow the player to maintain their equipment so that all they can do once something has broken is discard it
the problem with this is that it turns every combat encounter into a cost benefit analysis. that could be fun and interesting in another type of game (i.e. a survival horror type game where you have to decide if you want to waste resources fighting an enemy for a particular reward or simply avoid combat to conserve what you have for more important fights), but this game is supposed to be an open world combat-centric action game. the end result is that players will fight when they have to but otherwise avoid combat because it's almost never worth engaging in, especially when there are no rewards for doing so, and on top of that they will have to spend some deal of time managing their inventory by looking for new weapons to replace what they have and always making sure they have something that will withstand at least one combat scenario.

it doesn't make sense for this game, especially when you consider that some enemies can be damage sponges that eat weapon durability like a fat kid in a candy store.

>You could say instead that there should be a whetstone or some way of repairing your swords etc.
Yes, this would make for a lore-friendly solution (and give us reason to keep spending rupees later in the game) but the reason we're discussing this to begin with is because of the shitty weapon durability mechanic. The game treats melee weapons like disposable tools whether or not it makes sense to do so. You argued that thick monster hides would logically degrade weapons but obviously the pre-Calamity smiths, especially those in royal employ, would take definitely this into account. The Soldier's Broadsword, with a whopping 14 power, is described in its Hyrule Compendium entry as a "durable blade well-tuned for slaying monsters". This implies it's supposed to be durable by in-universe standards, where humans regularly battle low-level monsters. Its durability stat is 25. Weapons forged for knights and the personal guard are more durable although durability is not mentioned in their entries. Sure, weapons degrade with use, but nowhere near as fast as the exaggerated rate in BOTW. If the rest of the game world were forced to deal with this, no country could field a decent army. Every weapon would break within the first 10 minutes of use. They wouldn't be prestigious artifacts but simply tools that are useful for a short while, so there's little reason to care about each individual weapon. They manage to be even more worthless than guns in a shooter because degradation is permament and irreversible. You even have to buy new champion weapons instead of repairing them. This in a series with a legendary recurring weapon typically used to destroy the big bad. Link. Zelda, and Hyrule are constantly changing through the ages but there's always a Master Sword tying your adventures together. There simply isn't an equivalent in the vast majority of shooters. Guns just don't carry the same weight no matter how useful or powerful they are

>why can't I stop being so disingenuous and recognize that there's a meaningful distinction between a physical weapon and bullets
whether you're using 9mm shells or motherfucking HEAT shells, you're using something that was designed to be expended upon use, as a projectile. swords, warhammers, various types of staff, etc. are made with longevity in mind. that is not to say that they do not break, but they can be maintained and thus their life extended. therefore you are a retard pushing a false equivalency.

if botw allowed players to use a magic spell, a whetstone, visit a blacksmith, or some means by which they could restore a weapon's durability, then it could be argued that at the very least the aforementioned cost-benefit analysis could be mitigated by the player, and thus eliminate the equipment consuming penalty that is innate to all combat encounters.

oh but you're just going to tell me to spend all of time time collecting korok seeds so I can have 300 fucking inventory slots so I can then have 300 weapons I'm lugging around in link's asshole. well I won't. it's dumb and I won't do it. nor will I take photographs and fill up an entire photo album of entries. The Sword of Goujian was found in great condition after 2,000 years. The Great Calamity happened 100 years before the game. Well-preserved swords last way longer than you'd think, and most weapons are stored in treasure chests. A century is irrelevant to the life of a sword, and there are still living smiths associated with the Zora, Goron, Rito, and Gerudo races. They can replace destroyed champion's weapons, and the Gerudo, Goron, and Zora are frequently seen wielding weapons for work and protection. You're wrong about pretty much everything.

I think the devs were expecting players to throw weapons at enemies way, way more often than they actually do.

I'm constantly struggling to maintain my weapon stock because I have too many good weapons to use when it matters.
Boss fights become spin-to-win with two-handers and spears are just a safe option to deal with most smaller enemies if you're not confident with parries or flurry rushes.

Yeah the system is the worst of both worlds. Early game you're weapon starved and mid-late game you're weapon stuffed.
This is why in other games durability is either short-term or long-term. Either you pick up a weapon off the ground and use it then and there to get a bit of extra damage in (like in a lot of action games), or you maintain the weapon over the long term (like in some RPGs).
BotW wants to have it both ways and fucks up the design as a result.
Given the game's obsession with padding the long-term approach would have been a lot better. Let people find a weapon they like and upgrade and repair it to their heart's content. Embrace the RPG elements.

I know you faggots don't actually want to talk about ways to improve the game but I think this is a good idea: https://youtu.be/MGacJlH96_I?si=nMVjn1ZAHyv6x8Lt&t=1278
he talks at length so I'll summarize for you:
>design goal would be to force players to switch weapons in real time while engaging the enemy
>this is achieved by having two inventories, one for loot and one for currently equipped weapons
>you get two slots per each type (1 handed, 2 handed, off-hand, utility) for a total of 8 slots at the start; each slot could be expanded to a maximum of 5
>the master sword would be unique and take up its own slot, so by end game you'd have 20 slots.
>you assign active weapons per type to each slot
>when your weapon in slot one breaks, it automatically switches to the weapon in slot two for that category of weapon
>when they're both exhausted, now you have to switch to a different weapon type, or enter your menu to switch out new weapons for those exhausted ones
>important: weapons don't break, instead they just become inaccessible, and once you're out of combat, you can use junk weapons that enemies drop to replenish the durability of the weapons you've used up
>in order to avoid constant menu jumping and inventory management, you can stand next to a weapon and when the prompt to pick it up appears, you can hold the button down to auto-break it instead of adding it to your inventory, and then apply its restorative effects to applicable weapons (i.e. you see a rusty straight sword; you can use it to replenish the durability of your primary 1 handed weapon)
>only when your favored weapon is fully repaired can you use it again
this way, there is a repair system implemented, and you can repair on the fly without having to constantly fuck around in menus, and now you still have to cycle between weapons during a fight. not bad, but I just know that tendies are retarded and don't actually want to talk solutions.
