Every year. The writing was on the wall when Nintendo stopped showing up. Covid was just the killing blow.

what do you miss?
Go back and watch the last few E3's. Straight up non-stop garbage. E3 was never good.

That hack Keighley can't hold a candle to E3 even when it was on the downward trend.

nta but I miss being bombarded with announcements and trailers over the span of only few days instead of whatever the fuck we have now. It was an exciting annual event.

Why do video games need expos? Something like Direct seems much cheaper and safer since you don't have to deal with a disappointed audience

More than you can ever know
At least Nintendo could save E3
Nintendo can't save the industry from Geoff

>the last few were abysmal dogshit
And it was still a lot better than Keighley's shitshows.
And it also had the added benefit of concentrating the bulk of the year's announcements, across the entire industry, to one and the same weekend. Instead of everyone spreading things way the fuck out to avoid stepping on each others' toes. Or withholding promotions altogether.

Xbox still has their e3 show and that is the one I watch. Nintendo too but they keep doing it later and later.

Hell no, and anyone who thinks that it was better has the memory of a gnat. It died because it WASN'T a big party for gamers and didn't build any goodwill for the industry. It was boring, cringy "safe fun" slop aimed at institutional investors, and it was just as frustrating as what we're getting now.

The western game industry hasn't been exciting for 20 years. E3 was pure cringe.

>Why do video games need expos?
because its was basically a pissing match between companies to see who can one up the other.

Snoyggers like you repeatign this lie was the weirdest thing. Nintendo always showed up and had the biggest pyhsical space that was growing every year. They only replaced the shitty theater show with a direct and then did 3 days of on the floor livestreams anyway.

It was the journey, not the destination. The shows really weren't much better than Geoffโ€™s slop, but everyone from companies to shitposters coming together for one week was a culture that can never be replaced.

Did E3 get better or worse after it went to a private press-only show from a public one?

because E3 itself was that bad. It wasn't even funny, just sad.

Not doing a theater presentation to show off in house games and hardware greatly reduced their presence. It was understandable to older legacy studios like Konami, but Nintendo being one of the Big 3 and the longest running company in the gaming space trading the prestige of a live show for the canned, souless direct format (siting "Anti-Nintendo media bias" no doubt) was a disgrace. Truly the Apple of video games.

Because having singular concentrated events maximises potential viewership which is important for lower budget titles, devs without as much marketing power or devs who aren't well known in general. It's also appealing to advertisers

NTA and I don't blame Nintendo but the writing was on the wall when the Directs got more and more popular over time, though in hindsight the Smash updates were probably the precursor for this as it showed people liked steady updates rather than waiting an entire year for a big dump of content
When Sony started their version that's when it was 100% over and E3 was doomed
