I wanted to like it, but it was just a tedious slog. The map is far too big, labyrinthine world with constant dead-ends and does a poor job guiding the player, nonstop backtracking, no sense of progression, areas all look samey, forced souls mechanics, and combat just involves whacking enemies repeatedly at close range until the die

Metroid and Castlevania are very popular series, so it's simply the case that way more people have played them. Also the PlayStation being more recent and popular than the SNES is the reason why Super Metroid is only two votes ahead, rather than crushing everything else as it should.

I've never been that big of a fan of Hollow Knight. Like, when I play something like Pizza Tower, sure I would say that's definitely better than its influences. But with Hollow Knight I've never really bought into that meme.

I still like almost every Castlevania game and every Metroid game a lot more than I do Hollow Knight. The Souls games are way better than Hollow Knight too, if you really want to throw them in there as well. I like Cave Story far more than Hollow Knight.

Can't blame them for mad and enjoying stuff that's actually out. Metroid Dread literally came out before SS. You can't top what spawned the subgenre to begin with.

All this when isn't SS just gonna be DLC? Or did they wise up and make it an actual sequel unlike the Cuphead situation? That was unironically 5-year DLC.

Whenever I played HK, all I could think about was other games, mostly the ones HK apes. My mind kept drifting to SotN or any of the Metroid games and how everything they did was clearly better than HK.

Its fun and its got neat art but it doesnt beat the original big 2

Those are both considered the pinnacle of the genre ok aria and fusion, but these games are more widely known while hollow knight has a fresh new setting and a fun alternative. It isn't the best in the genre. It is a solid 9 compared to two 9.9s

There are so many amazing metroid and castlevanias that you could just keep playing them without trying anything new and you would probably have a better time. HK is a great game possibly the best of the modern era. Especially since bloodstained had such piss poor graphics.

I think Hollow Knight is really close to the top of the genre. The real problem is that this genre suck ass.
I used to be one of those people who followed YouTube channels dedicated to "Metroidvanias" to see the next one for me to play, and shit like that, until one day I realized I was stressed out by one of these fucking games and just freed myself from this terrbile genre of games. Nowadays, when I'm choosing a 2D action-platformer, the first thing I look for after "roguelite" is whether it's a "metroidvania" or not. If it is, I pass.
It's a shitty genre.
