Not the most interesting answer, but I've yet to see another roguelike with such a great interaction between powers, weapons, items and the world.
If you find a bomb it can damage enemies or yourself, or blow a hole in a wall revealing a secret room, or blow a stone up possibly making it cover a hole, or blow up a door, or blow up a machine, or blow up background stuff, or use the explosion to push items around.
You can have different types of bombs, you can end up firing bombs yourself, you can find bombs, you can buy bombs...
So many things in the game can interact with other stuff. The way your powers can interact to create different ways of attacking is impressive enough, but the world you move around in is also affected and can affect you.
The game is way too long and luckbased if you're going for the final endings/achievements. But you can get many, many hours out of it before it gets too dull.

Dead Cells is one of those games that I feel tries a bit too hard to be hardcore, but when a build comes together and it clicks you're melting mobs so fast that the difficulty goes away. I suppose that's all the Roguelikes but Dead Cells particularly has some monstrously shit weapons

I think it's a bit too slow to get going. These actiony roguelites need to be interesting right out of the gate, you're going to be playing through the start many times.
You can easily play for 1Β½ levels before anything interesting happens in this game. It ends up getting a bit tedious.

Returnal is a legit good rougeish shooter, far better than Remnant. It's only got the most basic elements of the genre and that's just great because the permadeath feature would get super tedious fast otherwise. It forces the player to commit to a build based on available weapons and perks after spawning instead of rolling one, which is genuinely a great gameplay feature that I hope finds its way into other games.

Void Bastards was a mediocre and poorly balanced game, but it really struck me how it's possibly among the best games on the market when it comes to understanding counterplay.
Most games do counterplay in a retarded "rock paper scissorts" way, but VB manages to pull off its counters in a manner that feels organic and makes you feel at leat a little satisfied that you put two pieces together.
>Office guy who shoots you once and runs away and hides
Shoot him with the poison dart and go about your day as he slowly dies. A weapon that deals damage without needing line of sight organically countering an enemy that spends majority of its time not having line of sight to you
>Office Gal that puts a shield screen between you two
Lob a bushwhacker grenade behind her. Weapon with a non-linear projectile arc counters an enemy that makes it very hard to hit it with guns that shoot their projectiles directly in front of them.
>Enemy that's just a swarm of heads that you need to shoot individually
Use your shitty nailgun. A weapon with bad damage but plentiful ammo takes care of an enemy that needs to be killed with a certain number of attacks rather than damage.
>etc etc
Loved that shit. This is how all games should do synergies and counters - behavioral interaction, not gay-ass numbers and if>then statements.

I hate all but one classical roguelikes because they have playthroughs going on for hours on end with lots of busywork and grinding and then in a couple seconds you're dead and all that boring progression you did in hopes of eventually being able to have fun was for nothing.
The one exception is a literal who roguelike called Rogue's Tale, a roguelike where, despite it being one of the most cruel and difficult RLs on the market, it also feels very smooth and addicting to play because of how intuitive and quick to do everything is. A death feels more like a speedbump than a real setback.

On the easy the Demon Lord just shows up at a set distance(and is easy enough that you should easily beat them)
On normal they just show up from time to time, you are supposed to evade them until they leave, and keep it up until you feel strong enough to defeat them the next time they show up
The demon lord is basically the tutorial boss, there are a bunch of secrets and extra content in there, like ignoring the demon lord and just running until the end of the world

I wanted to like Dead Cells, but the game feels way too emphasized on progression/unlocks. Like sure you can have those in a rougelike, but it shouldnt be the majority of the game. I don't think a TCG would mix well with a roguewhatever format without heavy modification. Since the entire draw of TCGs is the collecting and trading for forming your deck strategies, rather than a deckbuilder where you are modifying a starter deck as you go.
If you mean you want a dueling-style game, that's a bit more realistic. And truth be told I'm looking for ones like that too, way too many card games copy spire's formula too closely. Chrono Ark is good but it's not dueling-style. if I happen to find one you can expect me to shill it like mad in card game threads.
I can recommend that you try Millennium Blades if you want to stray outside of videogames and instead play on a table. Its goal was to emulate the jank of playing a new TCG and it's got imbalances on purpose, but since it's a tabletop game you have variable setup like what people expect from roguelikes.

After the update devlog where he shared the niggerist (black woman, another fail) and the cleric he was asked somewhere on reddit if him (the dev) refering to the cleric as "them" meant that it (the cleric) was non-binary, which he proudly confirmed and told all the biggoterinos to shut up and leave.

no, by its original definition, roguelite refers to run based games with very heavy emphasis on meta progression where in between each run, you get stronger, with the game being balanced in a way that even an experienced player will have an extremely difficult time winning their first run on a fresh save. the over all goal is to slowly become stronger until you can finally win a run and beat the game rather than each run being a more self-contained thing that you win or lose. the term roguelite was created by the rogue legacy devs to refer to that game and differentiate it from roguemediums, under the idea that those games were roguelikes.

Synthetik probably has the highest learning curve behind its main gameplay but is probably the easiest to master once you know how to play.

I also wasnt a fan of the upgrades either, the lower tier common ones are just meh and the better ones cam with a drawback so severe I didnt think it was ever worth it.

It was also incredibly slow for a roguelite, like as slow as noita when it comes to early game progression.

entry level roguelites typically aren't worth playing in my experience, if you already have some of the more complete experiences under your belt then you're better off moving to titles that fit your comprehension of the genre
If you've already beaten Isaac or NT, then games like Hades, Gungeon and Cult of Lamb will have little to offer you.
You can either severely expand on your autism and upgrade to Roguelikes proper or you can sift the steam catalogue for smaller Roguelites that better fit your expectations and taste

It has a high learning curve to it, but part of the learning process is figuring out that when you become accustomed to the gameplay systems enough you can start playing it much more like a run and gun game. You start it playing like a slow tac shooter but it eventually becomes more hit and run Throne-ish when everything comes together.

Hoarding your upgrade kits is normally not wise since you can pretty much make any weapon work by synergizing kits right. Only the grey Arena dlc weapons are utter dogshit. Some of the best guns are blue rarity ones as well.
I disagree on items though because you can upgrade them too and again some of the "low tier" ones are amazing like unstable current or any passive DPS ones. Drones and summons also take aggro off you but require more active pianoing of the keys which is the tradeoff.

I really dislike ITB because its less strategy game and more puzzle game. Every turn is setup through an algorithm that calculates the position of every mech and then makes it so there is 1 perfect solution. Very rarely does there feel like there is any strategic depth because once you begin noticing how the algorithm does stuff your choices in mechs/upgrades stops mattering beyond novelty.

puzzles are the opposite of strategy though? Strategy games are supposed to have multiple ways to approach solving some problem. Puzzles inherently lack any kind of strategic depth because there is an objectively correct way to play every turn. Hades 1 and 2 are shit roguelites. Great action games, love them, but the variety isn't there. Isaac is still the king after all these years. As far as actual traditional roguelikes go I've been playing Infra Arcana, cool survival horror-ish game where you usually want to avoid combat, but I suck at it.

It is fucking weird. Real weird and interesting. So it's a mixture of a top down shooter like Binding of Isaac and you have a certain amount of time to collect resources like seeds, and other items.. then you set up defense before the monsters try and hurt your crops. If you survive, you go back to town, upgrade and buy new things.. rinse and repeat.

Noita is good if you just do the main path and when you're just beginning to look into all the hidden stuff, or with mods. But the endgame is one of the worst I've ever seen. You usually end up in this situation where your playthrough has been going on for a few hours, except to finish it will still take hours of a boring, no challenge involved fetch quest where you're too powerful to lose, yet still have to be careful to not be hit by an offscreen polymorph which is the only thing that can actually make you lose. If you do lose all progress is gone and it can be many more hours to get to that powerful state again.

Some I wish I liked, but haven't put enough time into:

Yes, because it's essentially the same horde killer game except the camera is higher which means you no longer have to scream at a wisp pot-shotting you from behind, and the itemization is better because you can have actual builds now instead of stockpiling 17 different flavors of "Shoot thing at enemy" and having the game play for you. It's mechanically superior save for not having as much shit in it.
>I don't even dislike isometric cameras but that's like saying Diablo is a better World of Warcraft.
Fundamentally different controls schemes, core gameplay, itemization, gameplay structure, etc etc. Gatekeeper is just isometric RoR2, it even has the same controls.

I haven't touched the 1.0 release that just came out, but during the middle of its early access period (after the artwork overhaul) it's been pretty solid, and it is just Dead Cells but with better parkour.

Was one of those early access releases where the game was getting notably better feeling with each update, other than the story. The story presentation is still garbage, but at least it's just a minor part of it.

Noita and Isaac are definitely the kings when it comes to actual replayability and meaningful player expression, no argument there. Every run feels handcrafted by chaos in Noita, and Isaac's sheer item depth is still unmatched. These newer roguelites with metaprogression baked in just come off as mobile-tier grind to get to "the good part," and by the time you're there you've basically invalidated the whole loop. If your game needs permanent upgrades to feel fun, it never was to begin with.
