There's a lot of freudian / jungian psychology metaphor in dark souls.
Everything is turning to shit because humanity is being repressed.
When you repress a part of yourself for too long, it eventually fights its way back to the surface through disordered behavior or thought.
Similarly, the only remaining god in lordran (gwyndolin) uses the image of gwynevere (Persona) to try and preserve the age of light (ego) by repressing the dark soul (humanity), and this repression causes the darkness to run wild and turn into the abyss.

Most of the gods of Anor Londo literally give up and fuck off (Initially because Gwyn exiled his eldest son because he's a literal traitor) eventually because they know how hopeless fighting an unwinnable war against the Abyss is but Gwyn and many of his followers are still loyal in not giving up and standing vigilant even after centuries of trying to fulfill the prophesy. It's not so much that they should just accept it, it's more like why should they give up so easily when everything they built was not only fruitful but a net positive. Gwyn is a fucking hero.
