The gc was discontinued in 07 because the wii was backwards compatible and launched at a similar price point, while it made sense to continue producing ps2s since the ps3 was slow to take off and the price gap was huge

Because it is, first that those sales aren't even good, it's losing to a console Nintendo killed prematurely to push the DS, but worse than the sales is the fact that it doesn't even have an identity, it's shares almost the whole library with the PS4, sometimes it didn't even get a port at all for a long time and people have to get the PS4 version

Abyssmal software sales in large part due to nonexistent 1st party support.
Playstation is literally only being kept afloat because of their 30% cut of Fortnite, Fifa, Genshin and Call of Duty mictrotransactions.
Even most of these PS5 hardware sales was due to the carried over momentum of the PS4 which they have completely burned and won’t have leading into PS6.

It does; the pivot is result of rising dev costs for games and manufacturing, this lead to devs struggling with HD development in money and time and from Sony's part bloated budgets that were a dead end due unsustainable so less game output and with that the platform loses ground ergo services to keep afloat bleeding their audience with microtransactions, paid online as compensation for all the costs of their model not working enough anymore + using the services to circumvent the lack of games in your library using digital as fluff using old games

Consoles are sold at a loss for this very reason. Its been openly stated by microsoft. Its been a common console marketting strategy for at least 20 years.

There have been times though this hasnt been the case. The xbone sold like 80m ish units, but nobody fucking bought games. The poor attach rate is why xbox is leaving the console war. Well part of the reason at least, i think they also just think that the service model is just more profittable and less risky. I think its gay as hell though.

Similarly the total number of titles released for a system usually correlates to success but the n64 outsold the gamecube despite having less than half the library. To the extent that saying all n64 owners played the same games is almost a meme.

The N3DS has like 3 exclusive games. I imagine internally Nintendo saw the GBC as a refresh of the Gameboy line and when you look at the early day it seems like they expected dual compatibility to be a bigger deal so they counted sales together. It is arbitrary but it does make some sense that Nintendo would consider the different Gameboy iterations as part of the same family. Especially because by that time the GB line were Pokemon machines and GBA was around the corner and considered the true successor while the GBC was only there to slightly extend the GB life.
