At this point I feel like posers have mostly been taken over by contrarians/hipsters, but if you think about it that's really just "I'm so much better and different" poser-ing. Baring something like pic related, which doesn't really happen too much these days. Plus a lot of the classic "poser" games are old enough now they're just considered classics.

So, I'll go with the single most quintessential contrarian game out there, Dark Souls 2. I've literally never talked to someone outside of known hives of contrarianism (such as here) that don't put it firmly at the bottom of the souls games.

Einhander is a Reddit SHMUP. In other words, it’s a game people name drop online and pretend it’s the best shooter ever made despite having limited experience with the genre. In the grand scheme of shmups, it’s very mediocre. Treasure, Cave, Raizing, and Toaplan games mog the shit out of this game.

I like the cinematic presentation and the crunchy PSX violence. It may not be top of the tier list or anything but it's not a bad game.

Strange how I see so much hate on it now back in the day it was a "real gamer deepcut" or whatever.

Yeah, RE4 is basically the Lightning McQueen of the franchise - flashy, fast, and everyone acts like it’s the beginning of the series. I like Einhander. There is no game where I can say its worse than something else. Like how I can say Mars Matrix is just a shitty version of Hellsinker. Its a good intermediary between old school shmups and new, with a fun gimmick. Not my favorite to replay, but I don't see it as an arcade shmup. I just do a quick playthrough once in awhile cuz its cool. Easily the best game square ever made.

I kinda feel like Yakuza became a franchise that attracted a lot of people for insincere reasons.
Nobody in the west gave a flying fuck about the franchise beyond the small pocket of fans it already had. 5 didnt even get a physical release on the PS3 back when it was localized. Then, somehow Zero completely revitalized the franchise over night and I think a major part of that had to do with its content being presented in memes and made people see it as this wacky game series that was something super niche from Japan. Then it seems like Sega tripled down on that angle once they attracted this new crowd into the franchise that likes it specifically because its so craaazy.

Nope, it's its own separate thing. You even get a message onscreen when you select the mode, warning you that you can't back out of RPG mode to go back to the main menu. (just need to hit the reset button on the PS1 itself)

Side-scrolling spaceship shmup where you shoot down enemies and steal their weaponry to use for your own. Aside from the core gameplay being great, there's also some ridiculous bosses, top tier soundtrack, and even kino atmosphere (which the soundtrack is partially to thank for)

But this is just consuming media, not an actual skill. I can imagine someone posing as an expert in plumbing, fitness, linguistics, fishing, or other such fields. Those things take actual skill and experience to be an expert in. But posing as someone who enjoys certain games makes no sense fundamentally. The same goes for film and music. It takes no real skill or experience.
