Unique, memorable and approachable aesthetics and story (as long as you have specific tastes), paired with gameplay that is just decent enough.
Most of the quirky indie RPG devs understood well what made Earthbound a cult classic, which is why the aesthetics and story are usually the topic of discussion instead of gameplay.

It feels like being a kid in the 90s. The music and spritework are beautiful. Even the battle sounds hit your dopamine receptors, especially when you got a SMAAAAAAAASH! The dialogue is pretty funny, so it's worth it to talk to random NPCs. It's so good that there is an entire genre of games just trying to emulate how soulful it is.

The writing is fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously until the finale and had a fourth-wall break when that was still a novel narrative device. Not even a huge Undertale fan, but this Is the part I think it captures best that other knockoffs/spiritual succesors fail at.

It's a silly JRPG that takes in place modern times rather in a fantasy setting or a sci-fi setting.
The game can be pretty humorous at times, although it can get very serious, especially at the end of the game
To me, the most interesting thing about Earthbound is Rolling Meter mechanic, where you can still attack even receiving damage that deals more than your HP.

The aesthetic is a big part, but that doesn't mean it's lacking in substance. The story is pretty wild.
>kid dodges the cops to hang out near a meteorite
>bug from the future tells him about aliens that are gonna invade
>kid takes out a local gang, a psychic ant infestation, and then fucks up the local police department
>next town girl has a chick missing, so the town thug recruits the kid to rescue her from a bunch of cultists
>thug boss rewards him with a wad of cash, which the two kids use to save an indebted band from wageslavery, allowing them to ride on the band's loud bus to clear out the ghosts haunting the tunnel to the next town
>that next town is under a zombie invasion
>a hooker lures the two kids (Paula is ride or die) into a hotel and the local undead beat the shit out them and bury them in the cemetary
>they psychically reach out to another kid to rescue them
>he leaves his boarding school, braves the winter wilds, reaches his dad's lab, then takes a spaceship to crash into the grave, freeing his new friends
And that's just the first few areas. You don't even have the full crew yet. This game has a shit ton of stuff that happens.

A thing that's missing from pretty much every piece of modern media is the fact that creators don't have life experiences and things they like that they reference and put into new creations. Earthbound is full of pop culture references and you could tell inspired by the real life experiences of Itoi. You don't get that from any of the games inspired by Earthbound because people do not have real life experiences anymore.

It was never actually good. People like to claim that it was a hidden gem, but Earthbound sold like complete crap for a reason.

People often blame bad "Gross out" marketing for Earthbound selling poorly in the west. However people usually fail to mention that the game didn't sell very well in the east either, despite having pretty good marketing. It certainly sold a lot more without the need for localization efforts, but it still wasn't good.

Earthbound only sold around 300k copies in Japan. For reference, the latest Final Fantasy game at the time, Final Fantasy 6, sold 2.5 million copies in Japan. Even the worst selling Final Fantasy games sold at least twice as much as Earthbound did.

This is why the wave of people claiming all sorts of games are "Earthbound inspired", especially games from the east, have no idea what they're talking about. It was a trend by hipster western indie developers who thought it would make their game look cool because Undertale did it, and that's it. Nobody else actually wanted their game to be like Earthbound.
