What was gaming like twenty years ago?

Your image is closer to 30 years ago. And the answer is better in every way.

pretty much the same tbqh, by 2005 gen 7 had begun and the AAA cycle had solidified. It's all been a blur since then.

where a podracing game had you leaning back like you were actually cresting 200 km/h

Sorry, my brain still can't process this. Can't believe this is outdated.

fun new and exciting. devs were constantly experimenting with new ideas and often going out of business. technology was being pushed on pc every year and you had to upgrade all the time

the biggest difference was "exclusives culture" being way more of a thing. nobody really had every console unless their parents were loaded, and cross-platform titles really were way more rare than people realize
the console war seething you still see on here was originally a way to psychologically deal with buyers remorse/fomo, like if you were a kid and literally couldn't play a game the only option was to convince yourself it's terrible

yeah, but the games often didn't have inclusivity and diversity so I don't really know if you could say they were better. there wasn't even a single game that had a transwoman character until like 2012

For me, it's Gasgano.

Yeah, devs were built different back then. Every release felt like uncharted territory-sometimes jank as hell, but you could tell they were swinging for the fences. I miss when a game being weird or broken just added to the charm instead of getting a 30GB day-one patch. Half the fun was discovering what insane idea some mid-tier European studio cooked up while running on fumes and Red Bull.

Still pretty good, definitely changing and adding directions.

I want to say better but that was also when the normiefication of vidya started with the 360, G4 and the dudebro audience they brought in who hated all the gay nerdy weeaboo shit and only cared about Madden, GTA, TPSes like Gears of War, and Call of Duty.

360/PS3 era (which is what 20 years would be the start of) was the death of exclusives and the entrenchment of multiplats. Basically unless your game was made by a first party it was multiplat.

It was pretty much just Pong and Asteroids

It felt like there was hope for more astounding video game developments for the future. It also had the feeling of an art in flux. Many arcades that had held on against all odds were finally giving up the ghost, but home consoles were simultaneously finally attaining enough power to equal arcades. It was a weird time, but a far better time. Now arcades are hard to find and home consoles are worse than PCs, but better than modern arcade cabs.

>80s
Mostly gamed in the arcade. A few friends had 2600s and my cousin got an NES in 86/87. Was a fun past time, but mostly still played outside.

>90s
This is when I became a full on gamer. Arcades were becoming rarer and rarer, but had more fun in them than I ever had before. Bought a Genesis with some birthday money and my allowance and was nearly flunked out of 7th grade for playing too much Sonic and NHL. Bought a PlayStation and N64 when those came out. Got into JRPGs in the late 90s and horror games.

>2000s
Interest in gaming waned. Did get a PS2 around launch and a GameCube for RE remake. Played a lot of PS2 in college. Lots of Tekken Tag, FFX, and Gran Turismo 3. Got a PS3 and Wii months apart from each other, but just didnโ€™t do it for me like the older stuff

>t. Fucking old

25 years ago people thought gaming would continue to improve every single year, so they discarded their old games. Since that turned out to be false, the price of old games has skyrocketed.

games came in a cardboard box with a 20-30 page instruction manual and a can of baked beans
while your mom drove you home from the store you'd read the instruction manual while eating the beans. Those were better times...
