How does Mario have such a cult following when every DK game shits on it?

Donkey Kong County mogs every Mario 2d platformer by far.

Bananza shits all over Odyssey.

In what way? DKC has a bunch of straight up unfair secret design where you're expected to walk off chasms with no environmental indications. Unless you're counting JP SMB2 there's no comparison. However they are very good games with DKC2 as the peak.

They're like sister games, but yeah, Bananza is better. Bananza feels like the first real sequel to SM64 for me

Donkey Kong Country came out in 1994. There were like 15 Mario games between the release of Donkey Kong and DKC (nevermind that Mario is in Donkey Kong), including Super Mario World. Mario had a 10 year head start on the DK franchise.
Then you have Yoshi's Island which is right up there with DKC1. Not as visually groundbreaking but excellent nonetheless.
Super Mario 64 set the standard for 3D platforming which DK64 leaned heavily on.
After that it's a whole lot of nothing. While mainline Mario games were not great, the spinoff series like Paper, Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion and Mario sports were all great while DK's were not.
DK's claim to fame are the OG Donkey Kong, DKC 1-3 and now Bananza. Hardly "every" game when quantity > quality

The entire DK-verse that Rare started is considered by proxy part of the Mario series, like Warioware and Yoshi's Island, or at the very least has an overlap in fans. Mario also has plenty other games like MK that sell gorillions, so it has a lot more exposure.

DKC isn’t even as good as Classic Sonic. Most overrated games ever.

Rare games are slop and they made DK fucking ugly which Nintendo finally fixed

Mario games are easier, so logically they have a bigger audience

I liked Bananza and can still tell you it copied several "slop" mechanics and has zero aesthetic cohesion outside the Rare level segments, try a little harder next time.
