>How does Mario have such a cult following when every DK game shits on it?
Donkey Kong Country came out in 1994. There were like 15 Mario games between the release of Donkey Kong and DKC (nevermind that Mario is in Donkey Kong), including Super Mario World. Mario had a 10 year head start on the DK franchise.
Then you have Yoshi's Island which is right up there with DKC1. Not as visually groundbreaking but excellent nonetheless.
Super Mario 64 set the standard for 3D platforming which DK64 leaned heavily on.
After that it's a whole lot of nothing. While mainline Mario games were not great, the spinoff series like Paper, Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion and Mario sports were all great while DK's were not.
DK's claim to fame are the OG Donkey Kong, DKC 1-3 and now Bananza. Hardly "every" game when quantity > quality
