Narrative-wise? An asspull, they didn't really do much with the idea anyway (not to mention someone was probably trying to soft-reboot 40k). IRL? Intentionally trying to make Space Marine players gradually rebuy their entire army. Cosmetically? Subjectively uglier helmets and QUALITY designs like the Desolation weapons, the vehicles are all over the place.

They more or less waited until Primaris to make marines in the current scale and improving lackluster rules, doing it with lots of one-off squads in the same fashion as Craftworld Eldar. On the other hand, Citadel did get to making plastic models for 30k, with mixed results on the armor marks.

One of the big reasons I love DoW dark crusade and soulstorm is being able to play through the campaign as all the different factions, each having their own means of winning, so it's kinda like multiple games in one. Favorite faction is IG, but I'm happy playing any of them. Can't help but imagine IG will be a guaranteed expansion faction, likely bundled with another.

I'm hopeful, it has base building so that's a good start, even if it is good you have a portion of the 40k community that is living in the past, aka boomers yelling at clouds and having a meltie over primaris still ( sad)

White Dwarf 2019 brought Primaris Marines to the Blood Ravens, the only non-First/Second Founding chapter to have received a segment from James Workshop.

Basically a Custodes ship approaches a Blood Ravens 7th company battle barge with some literal who captain (Atanaxis) kept his cool towards a bunch of Custodian asshats and received the Primaris gene seed along with all the stuff they'll need to replenish their ranks, not actual reinforcements unlike other chapters.

It also sheds light on DoW2 characters and where they've been. Essentially all of them got promoted outside of Martellus who is still a regular Techmarine. Gabe and Jonah still lead the Blood Ravens as Chapter Master and Chief Librarian respectively with Diomedes as the current Master of Sanctity.

Hairgel is the new 4th company captain along with Thaddeus as a veteran sergeant. Tarkus is also a veteran sergeant but with 1st company and Cyrus became the 10th company captain.

It also points out that Primaris Blood Raven geneseed is very stable and turns most of their neophytes into psykers to the point they also recruit blanks to ensure that a Kyras situation never happens again.

There's a short story from a White Dwarf issue that's six years old about Blood Ravens being given Primaris by the Custodes. It's hardly new. I think Primaris conceptually is not good lore, but the models are better proportioned and have greater detail, and at the end of the day it's still marines doing marine things so very little has changed in the grand scheme of things.

Primaris are for people who think things like turning skulls into drones or putting candles on everything or praying to your computer so it turns on are goofy and need to be removed. It's for people who think Guardsmen walking into battle in Napoleonic line formations carrying giant religious banners to fight mechs the size of a skyscraper is goofy and they should operate like 21st century militaries. They think putting a cathedral on a spaceship is goofy and should be removed. Then they lost a bit in the Tyranid invasion in 2 and dwindled during their civil war with Kyras and the traitors.

Graphically the game looks fine. It looks like it has dow2 cover elements and dow1's base building/macro stuff.

On the other hand, I hate that every squad you have has a giant ass icon in the bottom and obstructs a bunch of the screen. Hate every RTS that does that, such a stupid feature that just pretends to be informative but in reality hardly gives you any important information. Just have a "select all units" hotkey, and from there you can see and select any swuad you want. Really hope you can hide this shit.

Also don't like how the game is not using a grid hotkey layout for the icons, this shit should be absolutely standard these days. Also why is it 2 rows of icons instead of 3 like we always had.

Also really hope the base building and macro is actually engaging at least on the level of DoW1 and isn't just some throwaway feature like in dow3 where it's almost as if it wasn't even there.

the shield helps with the recoil by fluff, reloading is handled like in many other cases in a marine army, like terminators, either the ammo is already accounted to last for their purpose on the field, or it gets supplemented via ammo drops the marines make use of once the lightning strike is done

It's the same in primaris, it's just that the relic guys go together instead of being scattered all over the other units
