the time sink isn't the issue, people have no problems sinking hundreds or thousands of hours into other skinnerbox games. it's that mmos haven't kept up with the times and if anything have actually degraded with time

osrs has actually aged well in the age of having side-game whilst scrolling tiktok, youtube shorts, netflix in the other window, discord in one ear audiobook in the other.
having to mash 1234 (i guess 1111 now) non-stop in content for wow type games even though the 99% of it is utterly trivial and could easily be as automated or as hands-off as osrs, doesn't work for that.
its demanding full attention and APM for no real superior benefit. so you can raise another [Renown Bar of the Month] which is irrelevant next patch? at least osrs has permanent progression.

FF used to be about fantasy now the latest expac is all twitch themed futureslop and modern clothing instead of fantasy aesthetics. i hate yoshi for letting it happen

Runescape can be played on a phone and it has nothing you have to keep up with, you just start the game, do some tutorial and then pick whatever your autism desires.
Meanwhile in FFXIV I have to do the story and even skipping it takes a century and in WoW I have so many fucking forced dailies I might as well play a gacha which is as bad but is at least free.
