If I pretend it actually came out as the second Shantae game on GBA in 2003 it's pretty good, but I can't really ignore the fact that it's actually the sixth game in the series and previous games already used its graphics and all its animal transformations on top of every other game except Risky's Revenge having more content. Sky and Bolo meet Rotty for the first time, they all eventually decide to move to Scuttle Town like seen in Risky's Revenge, Risky gets mad and says she will have her revenge (TM) at the end of the game. There are also a few details that call forward to "future" games like the bosses being traitorous servants of the Pirate Master that Risky frees to work for her or a kid talking about seeing the giga mermaid. Bolo has a baby brother out of nowhere with an NPC saying he sees a bright future ahead of him "but not for the next handful of games, he should sit those ones out".

I believe all of them are available on current consoles and PC nowadays. There's Shantae, the one you've already played. Then Risky's Revenge, originally for DSiWare. Then Pirate's Curse, 3DS/Wii U. Half-Genie Hero, Wii U/PS4. Seven Sirens, Switch/PS4. These are all set chronologically one after the other. However the new one, Risky Revolution, is a cancelled GBA game that was originally supposed to be the second Shantae game and has only been finished now. It's still the second game in the chronology, between Shantae and Risky's Revenge. You decide whether to play it second or sixth.

Very mediocre metroidvanias. You probably won't be miserable playing them, but you will probably quickly forget them when they are done. They don't have the mobility/playability of a lot of the other metroidvanias, and instead relies on charm and a bit of grinding gems.

The only real game that really deserves to be played is Pirate's Curse, it's pretty much universally agreed to be the best. It has dungeons, and it has seamless mobility upgrades which work to address the "mobility" issue I mentioned earlier. Every other shantae game is slow and forces you to transform into animals and dance and shit to do anything.

I know you said you weren't going to skip any, but I would strongly recommend just playing Pirate's Curse. The plot is very shallow, and can be picked up pretty fast. even when you play the games in order, the characters talk and act like they've already known each other for a long time, so you aren't even getting important backstory or anything, just establishing relationships.

All of them are very short "metroidvanias", it has a lot of cheese and charm that you can't really find in other indie games organically. Pirate's Curse is the best in the series on all fronts, Half Genie Hero is more of a platformer than a metroidvania, but still pretty fun and it's side modes aren't too bad besides the sleepwear one and friends to the end, those are bad, Seven Sirens is the most recent ""new"" entry and it's just decent. Help me out bros, I'm conflicted on what game to play next. I kind of want to play every game in the series, but I feel like Shantae GBC and Risky's Revenge might not be worth my time since they are early entries. Will definitely play Siren's Curse, but idk if playing too much new Shantae would ruin me on the older games being antiquated, I barely touched them.

I finished:
Pirates Curse - Favorite one, that last level was aids though. Feel like the writing, art style, music, and scripted events carried it. The level design isn't great. Still a good 7/10.

Half Genie Hero - Solid 5/10, but the level design was bad. Unique ideas on the levels to make it more adventure-esque, but built into a linear structure. Having to backtrack and check every inch of a level for something and then do that multiple times was not intuitive or very fun; I feel like this game would've been way better with a map.

I just booted up the OG with the enhanced GBA features and while it's really impressive with a great intro level, that's about where it peaks because holy shit, the controls and having no map really hurt it, along with mindlessly running through screens of enemies with the expectation to memorize for backtracking. I haven't played SS enough, but it's similar to Pirates. The reason why it had zero noticeable fanfare/marketing was because it was released exclusively on Apple Arcade, but when they ported it to PC, Wayforward didn't market it at all for some reason. Maybe there was some contract problem or maybe they are ashamed of it? HGH was a big step back from Pirate's Curse to about everyone who played it so maybe SS was just a "okay fine, here, we made the game you wanted" type of deal? HGH probably had the most amount of marketing and hype behind it and was pushed as a big love letter to the series by the devs. I backed it to get the Vita collector's edition and then bought the PC version twice (regular and ultimate) (on sale).

Pirate's Curse and 7 Sirens has a map. Each location in PC has their own maps plus the dungeons themselves have maps. Same with 7S where it has a world map plus the dungeon maps. Other than that, It is next to impossible to get lost in a Shantae game(HGH was broken up into linear levels).

I never liked precision platformers. I've always regarded meat boy and celeste as shit games from day one even back then. Though that said at least shantae has a character design, and her games are serviceable if bland. Then you should also know that the fans always suggest Pirates Curse, Seven Sirens, and Half Genie Hero -- the three generally agreed upon good ones. I agree they're pretty mid platformers, but the controls are nice which is better than I can say for other platformers with no tits, ass, or tummy.

Meh, something needing to be Wonder/Dread good is pretty arbitrary, especially when priced accordingly. I'd rather play Pirate's Curse again than Wonder personally, though probably not games like World or 64. And Dread was...actually, that one's pretty good.
