It's not really a middle ground so much as it is the opposite end of the spectrum. It was actually planned out even if towards the end they ended up needing to come up with work saving solutions. Nearly every souls game after that ended up just stitching random levels and bosses together and relying entirely on fast travel to ruin your mental map.
