apology to corridors
I used to think stringing together game areas together with tunnels and corridors is lazy game design. But I've since started playing Elden Ring and I sincerely apologize. I was wrong and corridors are the way forward.

Surely there's some middle ground between flat giant boring plane and tiny one-way corridor. Some sort of... level, that's designed.

Dark Souls 1 was the perfect middle ground (As long as you ignore Lost Izalith, which feels like an Elden Ring area placed in Dark Souls)

I think people are becoming aware on how much of a meme open world games are. Metroidvanias have a similar issue, in that to access later parts of the game, you need said item to double jump. Gets really boring when all of them do the same gimmick.

It's not really a middle ground so much as it is the opposite end of the spectrum. It was actually planned out even if towards the end they ended up needing to come up with work saving solutions. Nearly every souls game after that ended up just stitching random levels and bosses together and relying entirely on fast travel to ruin your mental map.
