What actually happens is that in 3D (4D technically) space becomes one dimensional, as nothing can move in any direction other than toward the singularity. As you approach the singularity, the difference between the gravitational force on your legs and your head would be so drastic that you'd literally be torn apart.
For you, time would pass normally, but your image (ie what you 'left behind' on the event horizon) would be still, never moving, never changing, until it decays and gradually redshifts.
