Just finished replaying it and I have to agree. They really nailed the atmosphere of the middle ages. Acre especially is my favourite. Also it looks amazing for something that came out in 2007

Ultimately was it the right choice to bench Altair and never make a game about him again? The mix of the dark & gritty atmosphere, his great character development and brilliant world around him, made his story & writing genuinely brilliant and he was the best protag by far. By never making another game about him they ultimately secure his legend but likewise his legacy is put in question because he only has 1 game and would he have shined as bright in the next?

Ubisoft's main mistakes were butchering the modern story line, firing the guy who directed AC1, AC2 and Brotherhood, and turning AC into generic ARPG slop instead of a game about assassins, stealth, and a global conspiracy
Anonymous No.718578901
>>718578151
I think they should have doubled down on the stealth and made it closer to Hitman.

AC1 had a good formula and basic idea, but it needed refinement because the stealth was quite simplistic and you were limited in terms of the ways you could approach the targets (only having 2 or 3 ways to get to them at most).

Yeah firing the guy who made and cares about the franchise definitely pushed the series into mediocrity fairly quick. Seemed like that kinda thing was fairly common in the 7th gen
Anonymous No.718580940 >>718581378

It happened because the series sold unexpectedly well, and Ubisoft got the idea in their heads to make it their CoD (since yearly releases where something CoD popularised back then).

People forget this, but the first AC game was a niche experimental passion project that got unexpectedly popular.

The concept of the bleeding effect was neat. How Desmond is, seemingly, some random mook that was forced to undergo experimentation in the Anima. Then you discover through the bleeding effect that there were others before him.

Modern day assassin Desmond would have been kino.

I get the feeling that the main reason the modern day sections where so divisive was that Desmond was just a bland Everyman, which was by design, but it sticks out when you have to play as him alongside a far more interesting assassin with far more freedom in terms of gameplay.

If Desmond was even half as interesting as Altair, his sections would be more widely liked.

>The Eagle Bearer
>Eivor
>Anywhere but near Shay for worst character.
On what planet? The Eagle Bearer has no consistent character building whatsoever and actively changes their opinions on a dime even if you don't want to. They literally do a 180 on "Hate Sparta" out of nowhere, actively insult Barnabas for no reason despite knowing that everything he is saying is 100% true and even killed the various things he's talking about, and go from atheist to religious to atheist to a believer of a religion they know for 100% fact in no uncertain terms isn't real and never was.

Eivor has the same issues with being completely bipolar.
>She won't stop being suspicious of Basim and angry at him for zero reason despite wholly trusting him despite Sigurd vouching for him.
>She can't make up her mind about if she hates Christians or not since she will take part in mocking them and killing them but then actively saves and helps them.
>She is a believer of the Norse faith but acts like an atheist most of the time, finds out for 100% fact all her beliefs are lies and made up yet continues to believe and espouse them as superior to Christianity or any other religion, and physically experienced what Valhalla would be like if it was real and actively hated it.

It's insane to me that both the Eagle Bearer and Eivor are religious when they both know for 100% fact the Roman paganism and Norse pantheon are just Isu being misconstrued as gods. They literally talk to them and in Eivor's case is actually Odin.

One thing I liked about the first AssCreed that was kinda lost in the following games was the fact that a lot of the targets were morally gray and their last conversations with Altair felt meaningful, you may even agree with some of them despite their questionable methods. From AC2 onwards, the series got content with moustache twirling villains whose motivations rarely go beyond wanting power.

Shadows kinda brought back that aspect with the Shinbakufu, a good chunk of them have pretty understandable motivations for doing what they did and I find it hard to outright hate them the way I hate the previous villains. However, the structure of the story is severely hurt by this non-linear progression they've been doing since Syndicate, they really need to get rid of that and go back to linear narratives.

AC2 and Brotherhood were mustache twirling.
Revelations was not and was grey with Ezio just ignoring what any of the Templars were saying.
AC3 was grey the whole way and even Connor in Liberation was considering joining Haytham.
Liberation was mustache twirling from what I recall though they did try to excuse the final boss.
Black Flag was grey for most of the crew with Torres himself actively trying to stop the slave trade.
Freedom Cry was mustache twirling.
Rogue was mustache twirling but that entirely game is so poorly written that none of the writing works.
China and India were mustache twirling, Russia was grey.
Unity was grey, only Germaine's Templars were indoctrinated. de la Serre and his entire retinue wanted peace with the Assassins and actively tried to achieve it despite their differences.
Syndicate was mustache twirling.
Origins was mostly grey, they just made some dumb choices. The Son of Ra was like the only genuinely crazy person from what I recall.
Odyssey was grey. The Cult themselves were just used as pawns by Aspasia who wanted to rid them of a bunch of bad apples and instill a benevolent ruler with Isu blood while the Order simply wanted to put their people in positions of power and rule from the shadows.
Valhalla was mustache twirling for some of the Order but the Order's main goal was simply Aelfred culling all Isu-worshiping blasphemers to Christianity and creating a more focused Order which eventually became the Templars.
Mirage was mixed. The Order's end goal was simply finding someone like Basim and allowing the Isu side to take over before said Isu side would rule over humanity with the help of the Order but in general their actions were mostly evil as they essentially just bled people's money dry, killed dissidents, or just harmed people.

Modern Day is grey since the Templars are doing everything for altruistic purposes.

My issue with Yasuke's character is that he was made into an important Oda retainer too fast, like he trained for a couple of months to become samurai n shiet, which is fine, but then Nobunaga made him something like his right-hand man right after that. I wish the story focused more on him building his relationship with Nobunaga and the other Oda generals, they're already diverging from history by making Yasuke take part in the Oda's invasion of Iga, might as well have more fictional shit happening so that Yasuke's character is better developed.
