I beat the game on hard when I was 10 years old, I replayed it a couple of years ago and I still had no problem beating it outside of the occasional van popping out of a side street.
Also remember to get the widescreen patch, which also bundles in modern controller support if you plan on playing this in the present day.

I recently gave it a go and it's not as good as nostalgia made me believe, but it's still okay. The progression is a bit fucky and it does get repetitive pretty quickly. I had forgotten that it was based on early ricer/tuner culture so most of the cars except for the highest tier ones were shitboxes, which is good for a laugh. The kid who picked the Dodge Neon as their starter car always got laughed at.

Its good because the basics like driving and progression just works. The game dishes out upgrades in a fairly quick manner so you dont feel like being stuck with a stock Civic for too long. Just so once up unlock NOS and turbo, it feels rewarding.

Also the track design doesn't get praised enough imo. They have that right blend of realism and interesting twists to make it fun. Like the hills in chinatown, halfpipe in park for huge air, mini Great wall of China and the sewers.

>>718573989
Lots of ways to pirate them on PS2 (softmod or burnt games with patched out copy protection) or you can prove that you are smarter than third worlders and play them on PC instead, where you can mod them. There are plenty of modded cars made in the same style of the game, with implemented vanilla bodykits and underground2.net, a modpack that includes more customization options that also fit in perfectly with the aesthetic, plus adding the japanese exclusive Sha_do graphics to the western release.

The difference is that you can play Most Wanted and Undergrounds right out of the box. No fixes, no patches, no bullshit required. The motherfucking Need For Speed: Prostreet (2007) made by Blackbox and released by EA was a buggy mess in 2007 and is a buggy mess in 2025. The official patches only managed to make it worse and more unstable. Without fan patches the game would be unplayable and unbeatable. There is nothing arbitrarily when separating those games. One works, the other doesn't.
