I picked the religious path, so I had a relatively smooth time with my run. You can also start checking CYOA games, although most of them are shit. Some do stand out, like the Infinity series or Aura Clash. But they are all WIP.

CRPGs
>Age of Decadence
>Space Wreck
CYOAs
>Roadwarden
>Sorcery!
>Suzerain
>Choice of Games catalog (varies from pretty good to dogshit)
>The entire interactive fiction space (mostly dating sims for women)

Ironically the full-fat crpgs here tend to do a better job of choice/consequence than the text based cyoas do. Cyoas tend to fall into the VN trap where they just have multiple routes. I loved Sir Brante but it does exactly this.

I've been playing alot of cRPGs and RPGs lately and I've added most of these to my wishlist.

Recently I completed KCD2, Pillars of Eternity 1+2, BG3 Honor Mode, and some others. How do you guys get past some games just feeling too old, or with systems so unfamiliar they become alien?
Anonymous No.718579340 [Report] >>718588858

I did a playthrough of this. I dislike how it allows you to just sort of fall behind and get completely fucked if you don't make the optimal choices. By the time I returned to my hometown, I felt like my stats were too low and I was basically wandering around getting boned.
The setting has some good ideas, some retarded ideas, it's a mixed bag. On one hand, the religion is somewhat cool and unique. On the other hand, the writing is often frustratingly one-note and fucking annoying. I think it's because they don't know what choices you made, so they don't know if you've already heard a given piece of information, so they just fucking beat you over the head with the same concepts over and over and over and over just in case you missed it somewhere.
Half of the events and conversations are just NPCs bringing up the same goddamn topics every time they pop up.
>"Oh boy, I sure do hate the caste system!"
>"Hey, did you know we have a caste system?"
>"Man, I'd really like to be in a different caste in the system!"
>"This caste system sure is something."
>"Did you know you were--"

>How do you guys get past some games just feeling too old, or with systems so unfamiliar they become alien?
My advice is to try taking the game on its own terms and excercising some patience. Classic Fallout is a great example of requiring this mindset. Without guides there's a decent chance you'll create a gimped build that is a walking, unfun disaster. Yet it's that ability to fuck up that adds to the charm of the experience, and the knowledge you gain in the process will make a new attempt much smoother.

Amazing thread, actually found out about some CYOA experiences I didn't know yet, even though I assumed I was an autist obsessed with this genre that wasn't shared with others.

I would recommend "Choice of Robots" It's the best of the "Choice of" series although it has a more niche appeal. It's about the protagonist making some AI. But what type of AI, the personality and abilities is decided by you and how you go through the story which impacts everyting, even humanity's fate.

Another more recent CRPG that I really enjoyed and managed to have proper choice & consequences although at a smaller scale is "The Necromancer's tale".

Full journey from regular dude to a full blown lich (if you choose so). What you are willing to sacrifice, romance options and how you go through this journey and what you use it for is all left to you. It has factions, side quests, reputation system and how discovered/secret your activities are which affect plot.
Anonymous No.718581509 [Report]
Do CYOA games solve the infamous problem of choices not mattering in RPGs? I've always envisioned RPGs having dozens of choices that lead to dozens of different outcomes that take you to all kinds of different places that will take many playthroughs to see all of but it's not really realistic for them and I'm hoping that since CYOA generally seem to just require writing, it should work out better

I know you guys probably already experienced it but Fate Stay Night is a VN that has a very "CYOA" feel to it with a lot of dead ends and little choices that impact the story a bit. I liked choice of robots and life of a wizard, anything else like those? As in I see a lot of those games being emailed to me from their newsletter but they seem very very story focused while the ones I mentioned are pretty light and have a lot of branching paths
Also the ones in their emails tend to have "you can be non-binary!!!" which I honestly don't care that much about but I feel like this just ruins storytelling and possible romance by having to account for being gender neutral

Bottom of the well, free, niche, very good. The story is a mystery to me to this day.

The game you, or some other anon here called boring - Suzerain, doesn't do that. In Suzerain you can become a dictator imprisoning people you don't like or a radical reformer. You can avoid the fight with Rumburg or beat them.
It had radically different endings. Rizias expansion even more so. But in Brante they went the easy route when they could have done more. In my opinion you should have had an option to prevent the revolt before it even began. You should have had an option to stay in the capital. ect. It's a good game but the ending makes me not want to replay it.

one of the better Choice of Games I played was Choice by Gaslight. It basically throws every single Victoriana trope together and runs wild with it. I've only played it once so I don't know how open-ended and reactive it really is, but I didn't get the feeling that the game strung me along a set path, my character went through pretty radical changes, from what I remember.

The devs did not give you an option to be as based as him, I would have used my emergency dictatorial powers to drain the swamp so hard it's not even funny. Yes I know the interior minister is part of the swamp, I'm the president. I can do things without her or fire her on bogus charges. Drastic times call for drastic measures.

In fact fuck the devs for not giving you a proper fascist playthrough which is what i went for every game and lost because it's borderline impossible to achieve. Also fuck the devs even harder for making me be married to a feminist.

That's right. I'd thankfully managed to max out both of the main priest stats by the end of the game, so I was able to do it, but the game's a bitch when it comes to balancing stat increases with morale and so on.

you can have two political enemies killed and the other party arrested if you fund the secret police.

You can charm Ovid's no. 2 and make him betray him, then use the stipulation where you can appoint a new supcourt to delete him and get sycophants on your side.

turn the two industrialists against each other and tell coronti that you're planning to nationalize his shit, he'll waste that favor making you promise to spare him (then doublecross him by passing the national media council).

You can silence the bluds by passing that final offer their parliamentguy made and you still get to integrate bergia.

Agnland wants nothing from you except that highway and recognition for that island of theirs, they're cool if you fuck them on the steel tariffs otherwise.

Being a fascist is easy but somehow the game still thought i was centrist.

I had no trouble at all with him in Rizia. My trust bar with him was so high when we entered negotiations that I even alttabbed to look up how it worked because I thought I was misunderstanding the mechanic. We got along swimmingly and I didn't even give him my nephew (or was that a cousin? Either way).

did you expand your powers? There's no way for anyone to do all of this without a guide. Expanding the presidents powers requires literally everything to be done just right. The salad is a meme i just had fricasse and gave her the basic courtesy of picking her meal first.

Just do the dinner knowing that she's not swayed by flattery but will eat whatever shit you feed her if you use legalese and act like you didn't skip ethics 101.

If all fails you can just alt-f4 and do it over because the autosave triggers AFTER you hear her verdict.

Ther only gamble i took was promising rickter an office which he never got because i got Victern to clean up and won at chess with Wormtongue (yes i admit i did a guide to win at imaginary chess with imaginary book moves).
