You got me to watch the direct after ignoring it for being a baby game and I'm having the same reaction. I still think it's intended for young children and don't want to play it but it looks very well designed and you wouldn't have to pay me to play it like you would with mariokart.

Because he is almost exclusively making mascot games for kids it feels like the only thing he personally finds interesting is the mechanical layer, so he keeps pushing for either more complex mechanics or more content. His games then feel like strange mishapen sculptures full of gold.

I think partially he's got a hangup on Melee (as does the entire fanbase). He basically killed himself for that game and it's a jankfest in many ways, but there is so much depth that the team intentionally infused into the design and he's turned his back on ultra-competitive gameplay since then. Like, looking at Air Ride contextually after Melee is insane, even if Kirby started out as a 2-button game on GB. I'm hoping with the relatively strong reception of Ultimate he can finally feel accomplished that he overcame his prior output but I feel like he can never truly give up directing Smash until he's physically incapable of doing so.

The biggest gripe I have with Air Ride is that City Trials is clearly unfinished and always was. 99% of satisfaction in City Trials comes from the sandbox mode but somehow the climax of the mode is always some shitty unsatisfying Mario Party minigame that ends in 10 seconds. Nintendo owns Kirby, theres no obligation to anyone to force a new game. If they wanted to keep the partnership with bamco alive then they should have let sakurai make whatever he wanted.

The only explanation I can think of for riders is either there wasn't enough time and they had to shit out a game quickly or Nintendo is doing an IP push for Kirby and wants as many games out as possible. It's still stupid to release this and mk within months of one another

Unfortunately still not enough to make me buy a Switch 2. I'm not even sure if I will buy consoles anymore. They were already pushing it with online subscription and joycon drift but now games just jumped $20-$30 like wtf. And Switch 2 barely looks different from Switch 1. It's actually bigger with way worse battery life which I dislike, so I'm paying $500 for a downgrade.

There were at least 2 indie City Trial clones in the making. I wonder how they are taking this news that their work is gonna be obsolete.
