Nothing, the genre sucks and it's a poor excuse for having an action game (maybe with some puzzles) with horror elements. There is no real feeling of being "scared" in any of the resident evil games besides occassional jumpscares, the only ones that really got me was in RE1make with crimson head unexpectedly coming up with that terrible noise he makes and RE3make with random zombie jumping me at a doorway. It's not scary but it's satisfying to solve puzzles and progress to another area.
The real "horror" is being helpless and having no control over what can happen to you, at least in my opinion. Ashley part in RE4make was alright. I'd say Outlast is an alright example because you are meant to run 99% of the time, if it's even a survival horror to begin with.
