When did flaunting the size of your game collection go from being a point of pride to being seen as hoarding and a wasteful use of space?

Back then pics like these would just be shown to other collectors and hobbyists. The rise of the internet made it so these pictures got spread to outside circles and naturally those not into collecting started to mock it.

It goes beyond that where there is an active encouragement to minimize one's gaming footprint as much as they can via digitization and emulation.

Why? Why don't you want me to have video game stuff anymore? Why is it better like this?
Anonymous No.718598442
I don't see a point to hoarding modern games in the digital era. Vintage stuff or consoles with sentimental value make sense, that's the whole reason you collect anything. I see someone with a mountain of physical switch games and I just can't comprehend why they would bother when it would all fit on one microsd card.
Anonymous No.718598636 >>718599054 >>718599550
It didn't because 1. I own a house with plenty of room for stuff (games, books, figures, music, etc.) and 2. The space you enjoy wasting is not wasted space.

Nobody is stopping you from hoarding ohysical media, fag. Digital is being pushed because it's convenient and the average normie isn't having panic attacks over the idea of his favourite game not being playable 20 fucking years later.

>Why?
I've moved quite a lot during my life and I honestly love having a gigantic library of games/shows/movies/books all in digital form. Much easier packing up a computer and a few extra hard drives than humping boxes full of books up and down stairs. I'm also not someone that bitches about people with collections though, but it's why I've gotten rid of a lot of what I had and should probably get rid of more. What I've got left is mainly sentimental like my old MTG cards and tabletop RPG books but that shit's expensive enough now due to collectors I may sell it too. The cards I know there are places where you can just box them up and they'll sell the lot for you, the books would be more of a pain

that's why you are laughed at, you're laughed at for hoarding plastic

Have y'all tried growing up and admitting that a lot of this stuff isn't worth keeping?
Lots of celebrity actors refuse to watch their own movies if they feel the project came together poorly.
Lots of people who worked on the very games you hoard don't even want to own a copy.
Very little of what is pictured is worth owning long-term.

Nah, it's actually the normalization of baseless criticism. "It's shit unless it manages to impress ME, a highly important individual with impeccable tastes. No, I will not think very hard about my criticisms I just know."
At some point, society collectively decided harsh criticism makes you look based and understanding the intent and message of a piece of media makes you cringe and a nerd.
It's part of the demonization of intelligence and normalization of slave thinking.

Yeah, I (>>718598636) use "autism baggies" for most of my games and, for odd sizes that the bags don't exist for (PSP, Switch, Genesis, N64) I have similar cases like yours from RetroProtection. It all cuts down on oxidation, electronics' natural enemy, and completely prevents shelf wear.

I have a really large collection . But the stress of keeping it "safe" sucks some of the enjoyment out of it. I think I am going to start selling some of it off. Maybe play the games 1 more time and then sell what I truly don't need. Could put the money into redundant hard drives.

The last time I saw a collection thread it was overwhelmed by hordes of faggots unironically treating it as a checklist instead of being populated almost entirely by actual enthusiasts. Basically just a bunch of people with 20 games for (system) that included the standard /v/ee recommendations and then maybe one or two critically acclaimed games, most of whom were talking about how they were looking forward to buying (game X) and (game Y) next from eBay when they got paid.

Whereas it used to just be a bunch of people posting pictures of all the games they'd bought, including an assortment of classics, AAA slop, random games from the bargain bin and anything else they'd stumbled upon while in thrift stores etc. So basically large collections are now largely done to brag about on the internet instead of being the natural result of playing lots of games. It doesn't help that the average gamer now believes that digital = GOATED and physical = CRINGE

The modern equivalent would be Steam library threads, but those are relatively rare because it's more of a hassle to take a picture of every Steam game you own as opposed to just taking a quick picture of your game shelf.
