accept a player-bounty, stake out an outpost on a planets surface, notice your bounty is inside the outpost doing a mission, find their ship parked outside, stow-away in their cargo hold, the pilot gets back and warps to a distant star system with you still tucked away in his small cargo area, and right when you dock into the hangar at a spaceport in a completely different system, you jump out and blast him, all without a single loading screen and with real-time combat

I hated how the show despite being mostly hard sci-fi, still had magical gravity generators installed on all the ships. At least in Gundam they had the ships designed with spinning habitational sections for simulated gravity on some of the ships that could retract during combat mode.

Anyone not born on Earth or Mars, and thus are cursed with being obscenely tall (only shown a few times in the first season because casting actual giants for every Belter character is beyond impossible), frail, and are unable to live outside of low/zero-g for extended periods of time. You're supposed to root for them because they're the exploited underdogs who do all the dangerous work in exchange for pennies (most of the time nothing at all) and thus want independence, but 99% of them depicted on screen are complete wiggaboo mystery meat mongoloids who you want to all be gassed because they chimp out at fucking everything and constantly bitch and moan like shut the FUCK UP. The handful of Belters who don't fill you with indescribable anger at first sight are easily the best characters however.

The author, Ty Franck, came up with the setting as a pitch for sci-fi MMO around year 2000. The company realized that MMO's are freaking expensive and backed out of it.

Ty had a fuck ton of world building, so he continued using the setting in his homebrewed d20 Modern campaign and one day he started playing together with Daniel Abraham. Together they got the idea to make use of all this worldbuilding and write a book together. The main characters of The Expanse were roughly inspired by the characters from their campaign.

After the books turned out successful they've also produced the TV series and released an actual TTRPG system in the setting.

They do have an oversized navy relative to their population and are driven by a collective ethos of terraforming mars which is absent on earth and makes the UN looks like an inert and gigantic bureaucracy and pit against the Belt ethos of independence which automatically makes them sound like plucky freedom fighters so a lot of people just filled the blank with military dictatorship in their heads.

You'll want to at least read/watch the first season since this starts during a pretty major event and understanding the buildup will help but tl;dr there's some biotech called the protomolecule that propagates and transforms anything it touches and a company trying to weaponize it infects the transport hub built on Eros moon of Mars to see what happens killing over 1 million people and it sets off a ton of shit across the system because the moon was both part of Martian space and a massive belter population.

Obviously more details but that's the broad strokes you would need to know since all the marketting says the game starts on Eros.
