Hollow Knight is objectively a C-tier Medtroidvania and I am sick and tired of pretending it is anything but. People need to stop putting it on a fucking pedestal as if it is G-d's gift to the genre, if you ever bothered to take off your rose tinted glasses you'd quickly realize it is an incredibly average game hard carried by a unique and pleasing art style. I would be open to bumping it to B tier with a compelling argument but I have yet to hear one.

I am a new player and yeah it sucks.
Game looks cute but I hate this maze and the lack of progression.
Unlike other games that reward you with new areas for exploring, this rewards you with dead ends.

Hollow Knight was "babby's first metroidvania" for a lot of normies. As someone who played Cave Story in like 2006 I found Hollow Knight to be extremely boring, it does absolutely nothing innovative at all. Even the art and soundtrack is boring.

i didn't hate it but having played other metroidvanias before, there was nothing in it that i found particularly remarkable. just competently copying better games without adding anything meaningful of its own.

as it turns out, good exploration is more fun than hard bosses, and HK's exploration is absolute bottom of the barrel with how much of a slog it is.
Now if you want good exploration and good bosses, there is a game for you but you have to have a high tolerance for pantsless anime girls.

Cave Story deserves its spot in the /v/ must play list.

I liked Hollow Knight, but it's much more combat focused than other metroidvania. Godhome straight up filters me, and of course there's an ending locked behind finishing its hardest challenges. But that's super endgame shit.

It's not enough to kill the experience for me, but the most annoying thing about new playthroughs to me is the map system. How you can't even unlock an area's map until you buy it from the merchant, and even then you still have to fill it out yourself. Hell, you need a fucking badge just to see where you are on the map. It's the biggest flaw of the game IMO.

The platform segments are fun as fuck.
