It was hype for normies when it came out because of memes. It got hyped up again during COVID when Todd started milking the shit out of it, and a lot of people had nothing better to do for months while society ground to a halt because of the flu.

My general rule of thumb is that how overrated someone thinks Skyrim is is inversely proportional to how many games they've played. When it initially came out and I'd played a fraction of the amount of games I currently have now I didn't care for it, whereas now if someone were to suggest that it's the best game ever I wouldn't argue against it even if I personally wouldn't necessarily agree. There's legitimately nothing that covers every single one of its bases and does all of them better, even within its own series given that (contrary to "popular" belief) it added something else in exchange for pretty much everything it streamlined or removed. So to call it overrated (which inherently suggests there must be something that beats it at its own game) you fundamentally have to be weighing it up against a standard which doesn't really exist.

I like binge playing this game every blue moon, but the game is so lifeless and empty and overworld so barren that it gets really boring and old really fast. At least with fallout you can do urban exploration and there's a little bit more backtory to everything (and I mean directly not "well there's lore in this one book in this one game that released 50 years ago").

I don't think it's overrated. At the time when it came out, it was a massive step forward tech wise for bethesda and set a standard and a trend that many other games tried to copy.

The story and lore both in the base game and the 2 story DLCs ranges from serviceable to genuinely interesting & cool and has stood the test of time so far.

The modding scene elevated the game from a genuinely good game that may have been worth a replay or two down the road, to an ongoing development of a good game that receives quality new content regularly. There is very little else out there that has the same amount&quality of content available, regardless of how you feel about bethesda.
