Metroid
Does Metroid count as a platformer? And if so, does that make Samus a platformer mascot?

Yeah there's platforming in the games with movement tech and all that. It has exploration with a big map but you're still jumping around a lot. The escape sequence in 1 and Super especially.

Platforming is one pillar of the metroidvania genre. The others are combat and exploration.

Yes. Metroid is a platformer game. It's also an action game. When describing the Prime series, it is also a first person shooter.
Metroid is multiple genres.

>Metroid is multiple genres.
I feel as though we as a society need to have a serious conversation about how video game genres are kinda made up bullshit.

The original Metroid was meant to blend the adventure of Zelda with the platforming of Mario, while including action to draw in a more mature crowd.
It has platforming, but I don't think it makes sense to call it a platformer.

no, platforming (and shooting/combat) are secondary for metroids/metroidvanias

Metroid is literally an Exploration Platformer
